0 for 2 with WBS due to "wet spot" contams
    #3855128 - 03/01/05 11:56 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I have tried WBS twice and failed in both attempts to the "wet spot" bacillus bacteria. I was wondering if anyone could give me some special tips/tricks they may use to prevent this frome happening. On a side note I tried soaking the WBS, not soaking it, and always PC'd for at least an hour. I think the problem may be in my incubation method, i was using a heating pad for both tries and i found it very difficult to keep the jars at a constant temp. Any suggestions?

Nope. You need to pc for 90 minutes @ 15 psi.

Bacterial contamination indicates jars that are too wet. Are you simmering your WBS? If so, stop. Just soak well (24-36 hours), drain well and PC.

Then you are pc'ing correctly and not draining in a collander for long enough. 2 hours of drain time works out good for any collander. Also, you are puttin foil over your filtered lids right?

i had wet spots in my WBS all the time until i drained it more!
so drain it better! let it drain more than before.
ALso you could add a little vermiculite in your wbs.
I usually put some verm in the bottom of the jars and it absorbs the excess water:-)

I had wetspot in WBS once.

I soak for 16-20 hours.
Simmer only 10 minutes.
Drain well!!
I increased PC time to 90 minutes.

Never had it again.

my WBS tek is to soak for 24-36 hours, drain for about an hour, add a little verm in the bottom of the jars, PC for 90 minutes.
100% success

I personally had the same problem for 3 consecutive attempts. I tried simmering, boiling, pressure cooking and still, nothing cleared up my problem. Finally after a lot of headache and an empty wallet, I read somewhere on this site that by soaking the seeds for 12-24 hours, you allow all the bacteria to germinate before you kill them in the pressure cooker. Apparently, in grains like birdseed, the bacteria create a special type of spore called an endospore that can survive PC'ing. You simply soak the seeds and fool the endospores into germinating, then kill them before they can reproduce.

I personally soak for AT LEAST 24 hours. Never had any problems waiting this long. Don't skimp on soak time. It is such a pain to have to wait 2 weeks to find out that you should have left the seeds soaking for another few hours...

I dont drain that long but I force drainage a bit. By shaking downwards, like a stubborn ketchup bottle.

I had alot of trouble with wetspot when using WBS on my first 2 grows. My success rate was only about 33%. I soaked for 24-36 hrs, let drain for 30 minutes or more, and P.C.d at 15psi for 90 minutes. Then I moved to popcorn doing the same thing and the success rate went up to 50%. For my most recent try I got finch seed which is mostly white millet and my success rate with the same preparation technique is currently 100%. So I'd say ditch the WBS and try other substrates, they seem to be more forgiving.

Most grains with there hull on, retain endospores from the fields which they came from.

Brown rice and dehulled barley never have the bacteria issue @ 15lbs for 45 minutes.

Agreed! The drain time is key for success in this tek. I'm trying to post pics, but wtf.
I upload my pics, but then what do i do? By the way, 100% success with all my jars now.

When you upload the pics and go to view them theres a text box under them. View thumbnails. You just click the text box once. That should highlight it. Then copy (you can right click) and paste it in the reply box. It puts in all the code for you.

I always add about 10% verm to my grains when they drain. After draining for about 20 minutes..pour in dry verm and mix it around. The grains should all be fully swelled with water, but the outsides shouldnt really look wet.

24 hour soak, wbs in one, rye in the other

Rye/wbs mix being strained after the simmer. Notice the steam. I never rinse my grain once, right after the simmer the water steams right off, also why it only takes me 10-20 minutes to drain that much grain (to the point where verm can be mixed in)

The mixture with verm fully strained and ready to be PCed:

After pressure cooking:

Yeah thanks a bunch you guys. My problem was definately not draining the WBS well enough. Also mixing in the verm is an excellent idea!, i wonder why i hadn't heard of it before? On a side note, that was a shit load of jars scatmanrav!!!! I'm very impressed!
