Micron Magick...yay or nay?

Hey guys and gals! Just wanted to first thank everyone here for the invaluable info on my becoming a shroom pharmer! I started about 2 months ago with extreme difficulty and high failure rates. Out of my first 12 jars nine went bad, and the other three seemed to be a little on the slow side. The remaining 3 cakes only produced 4 oz of mushies, but it was enough for us that night! BTW, those were Maz's, and I agree-they give the user a real spiritual experience, but that's besides the point. I now have 220 jars incubating, and I'm wondering who has used the MMFD's and what results they had with them. Colonization times range from 25-30 days, can anyone give an estimate or an account of the time saved with the MMFD's? Thanks

There only a few problems that you run across with the Micron Magick filter disks. 1.) Innoculation. -Must either be done in a sterile(STERILE) environment. - Or you poke throught the disk and have to cover it w/ a second disk 2.) If the disk stays moist for a period longer then a few hours mold can grow directly on top of the disk, and penetrate down to the substrate. If you are having colonisation runs of about 30 days with the PF tech, you can expect to take about 1-2 weeks of that time with disks. I usually get full colonisation of birdseed within 2 weeks.

Those discs are great. Faster colonization times

"Shaggs" is right about those holes in the disks. I innoc'd a batch of jars just yesterday and the more I look at those holes in the disk the bigger they get and I imagine a whole shitload of little nasties finding their funky little asses into my jars. I'll be adding a second disk tonight. Its cool, the disks are pretty large and I cut out 2 for every one. As far as speed Ive only heard good things about the Micron Magic and Im putting money that they'll save me time.
Tell me something good then I might agree with you..

i will vouch for mm filter discs... i have had pints colonize in 10-15 days easy...also since they colonize so fast, the chance of contamintion is drastically decreased... i would definrtly spend the what,$15, for 100... they are very good.. they claim their reusable but i dont know about that..they hardern....

i just put a sliver of tape over the innoculation holes... your right, i see the little hole as a great place for contamination to enter....

That sound cool. Do you guys find any problems with moisture loos thru evaporation? Do you cover them with foil as well?

nu- dp you recommend soaking them in a bleach solution before using? reading ggmm last nite, stamets says he soaks his filter disks in a weak 5% bleach solution- no one does this, right? i dont wanna :) plus, id worry they wouldnt dry right. just wanted to make sure no one else does or thinks its necessary ... *in crowd* kinda thing.

MMFD seem to work fine for me. I still use the MMGG method, and with the disks it seems like time is reduced. The following is my experience with them. 1. With a dry layer of verm I really dont worry about the holes, you can cover them with tape though since gas exchange can occur through the surface of the disk. 2. if using one disk per jar, cut the excess off from around the jar, do this before you PC the jars so that the excess does not wick up water into the jar thus throwing off the ratio. 3. During innoculation, DO not let any of it drip onto the disk. This happened on 2 of my jars and contam just grew on top there and eventually into the sub :( 4. All I do is spray each disk with some Lysol, not directly so that it gets wet, just in the direction of the disk so that some of the finer mist gets on the disk. 5. They are cheap order in 100 packs, dilevery time was good too. Thank you all for contributing to making this a great communtiy of mushroom enjoyment. May all of our efforts produce much fruit. pshroom

Just let me add that if your gonna do this... "2. if using one disk per jar, cut the excess off from around the jar, do this before you PC the jars so that the excess does not wick up water into the jar thus throwing off the ratio." You might as well take a lid from a jar and using the lid for size cut out 2 disks, why waste the material?
