Hm, casing layers are just to hold moisture right?
Isn't verm. a great moisture holder?
If so, then why do we mix w/ coco-coir and peat moss?

No, there are liever no nutes in the casing layer. Exposed nutes might attrack life as green mold.

Actually a good question. Maybe something to do with PH?

BTW I find verm on my schrooms rather a pitb! I hardly use any in my casings.

I'm pretty sure vermiculite isn't used alone, because it is difficult to see the degree of saturation. When other things are combined, (peat, coir, etc.) the appearance of the casing changes with the amount of water it's holding (i.e. the highly sought glistening just before saturation).

I'm thinking it may have something to do with having an optimum... consistency I guess for lack of a better word... like using brf and verm to the right consistency... could be way off base though :stoned:

Yeah I just said that. Something to grow on? Thats not true cause they fruit on a non cased cake or strawbed just as on a casinglayer.

I use straight peat with Ph buffer.

primordia formation is exceptionally rich in the micro climate made when the casing layer has holes/valleys in it. coco coir provides these holes partly.

I asked this question a couple weeks ago, and this is what hyphae had to say... (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/3806300#Post3806300)

"
Sure verm works but it lacks an optimum microclimate so yields are directly affected. Coir or peat based casings have a superior transpiration over verm alone along with a better surface structure. Bottom line verm works but if you want to take it up a notch then go with a recommended mix such as 70/30 coir/verm or 50/50+ peat/verm. GL" - Hyphae

the coir helps with transpiration. look it up in a dictionary or google it and click on definition.

Def for Transpiration:

Transpiration is the evaporation of water into the atmosphere from the leaves and stems of plants. Plants absorb soilwater through their roots and this water can originate from deep in the soil. (For example, corn plants have roots that are 2.5 meters deep, while some desert plants have roots that extend 20 meters into the ground). Plants pump the water up from the soil to deliver nutrients to their leaves. This pumping is driven by the evaporation of water through small pores called "stomates", which are found on the undersides of leaves. Transpiration accounts for approximately 10% of all evaporating water.

----

Another reason to use Coco Coir :

The Coco Coir changes color when wet...so the color change helps you know when the casing material is drying out.

Verm doesn't change color...like Coco Coir does.

good luck!~

Thankx zero, and i definitely knew what Transpiration was..
No dictionary needed :smirk:
But i didn't think it'd ever really apply to mycology :smirk:

But as for the color thing, didn't really grasp that until just now, i guess that'd help with water content, hmm....Well i guess this was anwsered, Thankx guys
