What options are there for satellite internet to bypass our local provider?
    #3852456 - 03/01/05 04:19 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

We've gotten completely fed up with Qwest and want to bypass them all together. Unfortunately, our apartment has a contract with them that does not allow us to use any other company. we also don't have the ability to get cable internet in our place. I'm kinda at a loss on what is availible to us now. I know I've heard about being able to get your own satellite type setup. Can anyone help me out with some info?

If you have a laptop or a wireless setup at all or know someone that does, have them come over and see if there is anyone running an open network in your complex. You would then atleast not have to pay qwest for their shitty service.

Satellite internet like DirectWay is horrendous. The latency is so incredibly high any type of real-time application takes a giant shit.

There may be point to point wireless in your area. You'd have to be facing the direction of their transmitter and within range. If you were they could install an antenna to send/receive signals. I believe there is an FCC ruling allowing everyone to put up a dish on their property. If you live in an apartment what you rent is your property.

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html

There are limits but they should not beable to stop a wireless install. What kind of contract is this? Did QWorst install a LAN or is this DSL? If it is DSL you <should> beable to change your phone company if not only your DSL provider unless your in a small town. Yes Satilite links suck (3 seconds of latency. If your town is decent sized you might have a wireless provider. If you give me a town or zip I can see if I know of one.
