>> The ego coaxes us into assuming a path that seems to be genuine spiritual practice, but then the ego goes right ahead and usurps it! Even chanting some mantra can be appropriated by the ego. We sit down to meditate, assume the posture, but it is out of ego.

This has been the biggest, most discouraging obstacle in my spiritual life. "Usurption" is exactly the world to describe how it feels to notice this going on. Only recently have I really begun to feel as though I've recognized it and have the tools necessary to overcome it. Your insight about the tendency people have to use spirituality to gloss over what they perceive as a mundane, tedious lifestyle is painfully accurate. It's wonderful, though, that a way out of this most common trap exists.

>> The very effective remedy for this is the accumulation of merit, and the purification of mental obscuration, in conjunction with devotion and compassion.

Could you expand on this a bit? What is meant by mental obscuration? What has been your experience with these techniques? Could you point me to some reading on this subject?

Thank you for this post!

Im suprised you arent familiar with the term 'obscurations'. They are basicaly our negtive habbits and tendencies that we have accumliated over many lifetimes of ignorance. They are like the dark clouds that obscure the pure blue sky. To purfiy them we must first be aware of them and then have some methods for purification. As you are buddhist i suggest you ask your teacher for some purification practices. Non buddhist practitioners can employ the practice of mindfulness.

A book i would suggest you read is "As It Is - Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche".

I think your post got people to reconsider, why they are spending time on things like The Shroomery. My guess would be many people felt hit.

I myself do not consider myself a spiritual, nor I am trying to convince others that I am. I don't consider spiritual people better than non-spiritual. I am simlply interested in the voyages of the mind.

And why is it that we consider happy and non-spiritual people shallow? And honestly speaking, I know a lot of you who consider people who are just happy, but in no ways spiritual to be shallow.(including me, and for that I am not happy).
