Which Oyster Species Is For Me ?

What kind of oysters should I grow? This is going to be my first time with oysters. I plan on doing a test run and giving them to supermarkets, health food stores, and restaurants. I'm thinking phoenix oysters, but I'd appreciate your input. Do they all have distinctively different tastes?

i did my first edible steps with pink oyster pleurotus djmangor iirc. actually its easy as cubes, seriously, no rocket science at all
id say you go to the store, buy some oyster there, clone on agar, make some rye/wbs/whatever spawn jars and spawn to straw/paper/coffeegrinds, pasteurized ofcoz.

Thanks for the reply ohmatic. Stores in my town don't have anything other than button mushrooms. I'm either going to find someone to trade with for a culture or buy one from sporeworks I believe.

>id say you go to the store, buy some oyster there, clone on agar,
I've thought about this, but read somewhere that effective results should only be expected if the clone sample is taken the day the mushroom is picked. Especially with oysters which are notorious for growing at a fast rate (and spoiling at a fast rate). How fresh should the oysters be to be cloned with effecient results?

I would say not spoiled Actually, oysters are very easy to clone. Probably one of the easiest IMO... Grocery mushrooms can be cloned, but try to get the best package. Even better would be to ask when the truck arrives so you can get them ASAP. I have noticed in some supermarkets mushrooms fresh on the shelf can sometimes be frosted (as in partially frozen). This is not good both for edibility, and cloning potential. And finally, with grocery clones you really do not know what (if any) fruiting potential the clone may have. Viability may be suspect...

Some strains of ostreatus can require cooler temperatures and/or a cold shock to induce fruiting. Others species are not quite as good at adapting to a wide range of substrates as some. But in a sense you are correct. Pretty much all the common species of oyster are easy to grow. But in an ideal situation one should start with one of the warmer fruiting species (or one suited to the fruiting conditions they can maintain). The pink oyster is an excellent candidate for a beginner. It would get my vote for the first mushroom anyone should try to grow. Very agressive and forgiving...

ok all I got to say is pink! croping cycle is by far the quickest. But its tropical so it needs atleast 80's wich is hard this time of year. Blue oysters are depedable and fruite at cooler temps. But do to the cooler temps take longer to grow. wich means more sterile techs. Pink oysters pretty much need the straw to be soaked not really pasturised. They just grow so quick that they beat out most competetors.

well, true. You need to be a little more careful with sterility on the blue oyster, however, they can grow on waste cardboard, which is a free substrate! and Cardboard is such a selective substrate that you probably won't have any problems. I use all waste shipping cardboard that comes into my family business, and it doesn't need to be clean. Then I just soak it in water and spawn into 4 mil poly tubing from popcorn spawn and it's going great I'll post pictures in a bit.

mine fruit without problems in 65-70degree, no coldhsock no nothing. they grow pretty slow though, but i dont really care. just wanted to wipte out this 80degree thing, it can be done below that as i like my room to be COLD. peace ohm

I understand what you saying by they "can" grow at lower temps, but when growing for a dependable cycle for a second income teps are important. 10 days from inoculation to fruit at the right temps.
So on the subject of temps yes you can pretty much grow most mushrooms from 60 up. But for a dependable fast harvest you have to baby them with the most precise conditions possible.

Here is a grow bag which has colonized in about 17 days at 69deg. F. It is blue oyster, spawned onto carboard. Today I moves it to a fruiting chamber, a 30 gal sterilite container with 3 inches of water in the bottom and 2x 12" airstones.
my grow chamber will be able to hold 4 of these easily.
In terms of commercial growing, sheik, you are undoubtedly correct, however, hobby growers may not nessairly want to optimize, optimize, optimize. Simplicity is king.
