Does anyone have any links or know the laws defining what a religious institution is? If say my roomates and myself wanted to start a religion, what would we have to do to get recognized by the government as a religion and gain the benefits of said religion?

We're still deciding what its going to be about. We are all kinda crazy. We will start writing our holy scripture soon, and I'm sure we could get more then several people to join. Itll probably be about nature so we can have lots of tax exempt land to farm on and raise food to sacrifice to our gods. or even if its not we could have someone buy it then donate it to the church.
It can't be that hard right? I mean the mormon religion spawned from some guy reading the bible out of a hat.
i found http://www.irs.gov/charities/churches/index.html lotta info here

ya we would have weekly sermons. I think you need to allow anyone who wants to go/join in. And we would definately do that.

i started one here a few years ago, but then gave it up in favor of satanic zen...i had called it dementia praecox, and it prescibed 'insanity' through psychedelic meditation and thought distortion through schizophrenic writing...it never got anywhere though...and i dont know how about making it officially recognized...

i was just pondering about this the other week. Not that I want to start my own religion, but I was thinking about how you go upon creating your own religion and such.

The IRS makes no attempt to evaluate the content of whatever doctrine a particular organization claims is religious, provided the particular beliefs of the organization are truly and sincerely held by those professing them and the practices and rites associated with the organization?s belief or creed are not illegal or contrary to clearly defined public policy.

get two authentically mexican hookers, make sure one of thems on her period.
after a night of strange sex, in the early morning hours whip the females but who is on her period, lightly sardonically.
then: one of these two things. plan a murder or start a religion.

1) Start researching various other religions, and have a good grasp of "memetics", and the dispersal therof 2) Seed/distribute your memetic inspiration to followers, have a target group in mind, i.e. those that are bound to fantasy, chaos, and/or freedom/constraint 3) have a premise for punishment provided that if one sways from the "path/mandate" they will be severly punished. 4) Induce a system of constrains and/or laws on conduct and behavior that is further explicit to your collective, i.e. give your dog a leash so to speak to denote that it is your dog (in this context giving your dog a leash really only means that it is essentially, giving it a staple whilch suggests that it is part of the "following" and make it such so that the denomination is apparent to the "outsiders" herin referred to "them") 5) Promise them something that is surreal to the extent that it is an ideal unachievable under the current conditions of society 6) register your affiliation, a religion requires more then 100k members, else it's considered a cult. 7) Provide some historical context such that, your religion really began a long time ago, you just lost the "ancient texts" 8) Taut the fact that all those that defy your religions will live in a lesser state of affaris then your own, which to say the least is essentially the common context denoted as "hell" 9) Mix fantastical elements of mythology within it, and give the "supreme being" a good name, that strikes fear into "them", and provide a literal definition of the name of said being. (Perhaps suggest that the definition of the word mean: to strike fear and to smite "them". 10) Register your religion, and the tenants, distribute through pamphlets, tv ads, subliminal acronyms associated with the belief system, media compaings, and charitable efforts 11) Pat yourself on the back and say, "It's good to be king" (forget the name of the movie). [Believe It's history of the world part 1]

Read "Start Your Own Religion" by Timothy Leary, there used to be a free digital copy on his web site, in the past year or so it's been down for renovations.

What an interesting topic..
I don't really have any info to help you, but I know I'd like to start my own religion - featuring THE COZ (ahem: William Cosby Jr. II) as God.
My friend would probably be interested too - he saw a dragon on my apartment ceiling while tripping and can talk to it in most states of mind (it's name is apparently "Hildy" and it's a bit of an asshole). He made a bit of a mock shrine for it, too.

Well, accordingly those of Native American descent are able to use substances that are scheduled on the basis of their belief. So If one were so inclined to unify and make a collective organization of "believers in the use of ethneogens... I don't see any reason why It wouldn't be applicable as is the case with the other religion for it is their belief/way of life. Be interesting if someone actually has access to some legal documentation regarding the lawful organization of a religion, and sees what boundaries the law would place on such a system.
But imo, as per Native American "freedoms" granted by the religion, It would be possible to induce variants of TAZ's (totally autonomous zone) that are unaffected by law, through the construct of a religion. Which would inevitably give all those lawyers a run for their money. Could even possibly induce an odd corporate law where they are unaffected by certain circumstances pertaining to law on the basis of their belief, dunno how far it can be stretched. Anyone reading that has access to someone whos is knowledgeable in law that can state the extent of a religions beliefs are applicable?
