pasteurized straw powder ?
    #3851218 - 03/01/05 11:26 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

hey!

say youd powder straw, pasteurize and squeeze it a bit,
could one mix with colonised grains in small casings
or would there be a disadvantage in doing so?

note: please no "spawn straw" advise, ive done it numerous
times and wonder about the use of it in this powdered form.

The mycelium may have difficulty passing through the substrate in a short time, because it would hold few air gaps.
Try it out.

But you may have better luck treating it like sawdust.

I will be trying this myself. I use verm mixed in with my whole grains and chop all my straw by blender. The bottom of the tub when I'm done is powdery straw. Next time I plan on adding some of that (maybe 50%?) to the rye/wbs/verm mix I usually use. I have sterilized straight straw in jars, knocked it up with liquid culture and colonized and fruited it fine.

edit:
I just saw you were gonna pasteurize it first, not sterilize. Well it seems like your just making a small bulk casing with a high percentage of spawn. Some people use half grains, half straw when they spawn. Seems like your just doing the normal spawn thing but alot less bulk being added to the spawn. Theres nothing wrong with that and there would be more nutes, more substrate, so of course more yeild.

Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay

I have done this before but i used coco fiber as the base moistened with straw water with straw dust, chunks of straw, grain and rye flour added. Worked great when you got the moisture content right. Its very hard to get the moisture content right when it seems perfect its still to much. This produced the hardest myceial mat i have seen maybe because all the fibers in the cocoholding it together. 1 other problem i noticed the very core sometimes didnt colonise because the mycelium forced excess moisture to the center but i have fruited them without a coloinzed core but if this happens it means you had too much moisture.

Let us know how it works out. It sure seems to me like it's going to clump up on you and form a brick. Verm will probably help. Also, straw isn't very nutritious, that's why large amounts of straw are usually used when it's the bulk substrate. I doubt a small amount will be of much use, but only one way to find out.
