Need some advice
    #3850915 - 03/01/05 08:56 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I used this first attempt to test all of my procedures before putting more money into the project. So I did not PC or even use a heating device to speed the process up. Everything has actually gone quite well (no contams), but due to my slow myc growth I now have a jar that is not 100% complete but has already begun to pin. It looks beautiful but is probably a few days away from being 100%. I can probably upload a picture in a little while but hopefully I've explained the situation well enough.

So, will it work out if I have to wait a few more days before its 100%?

Good work! I wonder how you got so far without a PC
Do you see little shrooms already or just pins? If its shrooms then i wouldn't wait anymore. Fruit them now because i think once it has entered the fruiting stage, it wont colonize anymore substrate.
Or maybe i'm totally wrong?

As far as cutting out the part that has not been colonized. Its not a very big area. Probably the surface area of a Nickel. Other than using sterile equipment, is there anything else I should take note to make sure I do or do not do?

I was going to upload a pic but my digital camera eats memory cards. I always end up with card errors and cannot reformat them.

One last question. What would happen to the small area that is not colonized if I did not cut it out?

by not cutting it out, its a place that contams can get a foothold, and possibly take over your cake. sometimes people find that when they birth cakes described like yours, that the cake is actually 100% colonized, and that little chunk just falls off. in either case, cut off any uncolonized portions with a sterile knife.

to cut it off, first wash the knife blade with rubbing alcohol really well, allow alcohol to evaporate, and cut off the uncolonized portion with a slicing motion.
