drying mushrooms
    #3850262 - 03/01/05 01:19 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

i just read all the faq about drying and preserving shrooms.

i was wondering which way that ya'll prefer to dry them, because i've always just layed them out and had a fan on them, but i want something better.

i've been thinking about going to desiccant, but then i read the idea about laying all the shrooms out, putting a black shirt over them, and then putting a 60w light shining onto the shirt.

i'd like to know what ya'll recommend for drying large amounts quickly, because i'll be getting alot next time i find some when i go hunting, and i always have huge losses due to maggots...

fan is best bet. fan for like 3 to 4 days. u really dont need a desiccant. i recently learned the hard way and some of my shrooms were rotting. i made the mistake of fan drying for 12 hours then using damp rid in a drying chamber only to find my shrooms turning black. please learn from my mistakes, keep it simple and use a fan. after shrooms are cracker dry, you can store in a plastic ziplock bag in your refridgerator. gl

i never had luck with only fan drying...
it would take hell looots of days!

the best way for me is to fan for 24-48 hours and then use a desiccant.

Go to ebay and find yourself a Nesco Snackmaster dehydrator (or if you're rich, a Gardenmaster). I have one of each.

6 hours from fresh to cracker dry with either one, on low.

There is NO BETTER WAY to dry your shrooms.

well here's what my friend does...

he's got this baking pan that is like 3" deep and it has a slotted cover...i think its for roasting or something so the drippings can fall into the pan...anyways...he fills the bottom portion of the pan with desiccant and then puts the shrooms on the slotted cover and puts a fan over them for 24-48 hours...he says that he can definantly tell a difference between just fanning and having that desiccant under them...the fat ones that would take almost 48 hours with just a fan take a little over 24 hours with the combination fan/desiccant...

then when they're dry he puts them in a plastic container that has desiccant on the bottom covered by a few layers of papertowel and puts that in the freezer...they keep great in there...

do not try to put desiccant down on a plate and put paper towel over the desiccant and lay the shrooms right on there....paper towel gets all greasy with water & desiccant goop...i don't remember exactly what is in desiccant and how it works...but as it aborbs water it lets off some sort of oily substance that i can't imagine would be good for ingestion...so the tiny little shriveled mushies that fall through the slots and into the liquid are considered KIA's...

he's been out of desiccant for about 2 weeks now and just been drying by fan...its slower but works just as good....

and if you do go the desiccant route....put the shit in a solid container with no leaks and check it every day...because eventually it becomes a sloppy mess with puddles of water if you leave it too long...

Your suppose to use one with an ajustable heat knob and turn the hean down.

It would also help when you dry if your were to cut up your mushies. Not really the cap so much just the stalk.

Hey people the only thing you need is what your using now. Your computer! Putt'm in the case and if you have enough fans, simply leave it on for like 10-12 hrs With the boomers close to fan depending on your setup. Dwam! Cracker dry every time! I don't even mess with them other methods. Peace.

what about a rubbermaid with fans and desiccant in it?

or is it better for the container to be sealed when using desiccant and just have the fans circulating within the container?

I don't know why so many people are choosing to ignore this response, but look folks... sell your soul by going to walmart and plunk down $40 for the snackmaster. It comes with 4 trays.. and really, if you want to get extra trays just buy an extra dehydator. The cost is about the same (I believe they sell extras at 2 for $18) and you'll have an extra drying unit in case your original breaks.

Low prices, quick drying times.. what more could you want?

shrooms rot because of exposure to oxygen.. much like we are rotting, albeit at a much slower pace. to avoid rot, shrooms must be dried quickly after picking. I'd recommend getting a NESCO SNACKMASTER to avoid the problem of rot. Again, that's a NESCO SNACKMASTER. $40 AT WALMART.

You can get them cheaper than that even!~

---

I've been telling people to check 2nd hand stores and Ebay for years now.

Look for the American Harvest Snackmaster deydrator...it has temp. dial to control the heat on the unit...keep it set on the lowest setting.

I have picked up 3 of these...for under $6.00 each.
And they hadn't even been used...so they were like new.
What do people do with gifts that they don't need...they sell them or give them away to the Goodwill, Salvation Army, Value Villiage type of 2nd hand stores.

If you can find a bunch of them....use all the trays on one...and keep the extra bottom unit's for incase it ever wears out.

yeah, I've seen you mention the whole second-hand store thing before. I'm kinda iffy about buying anything used besides CDs.. but now that I think about it, it'd be a good deal for the trays alone!

Yeah it would be worth buying for the trays alone...is right.

New trays alone cost $15.00 for 2 trays...they come in a 2 pak.

That can add up real fast...if you need alot of trays.

I'm still using the first base unit...and its been over 2 years now...still running strong.
I still have 2 back up base units...when the first one goes out...some day.

I know your gonna check the 2nd hand stores now!~

He probably doesnt already have a dehydrator because he doesnt have money coming out the nose and thus is going to continue to ignore all this great and well-intended advice.
Instead...
Go to any grocery store and buy a small damp rid room thingy (4$ at most). You should also buy a refill while youre there cause you'll need it after a couple gos ($3 for a ton of it). There, $7 and you could dry pounds of shrooms without loosing magic to heat. Now you take that damp rid room bucket and put it in a big old pot with a lid (or any semi air tight container). Now you have to move the air around. Fans can be bought as cheap as a few dollars, or less even. Wanna nig rig the whole thing? Grab a computer case fan, cut the wires, splice them with a 9-12v power supply from anything. Bang, they'll be MORE than cracker dry in less than 12 hours and storeable in less than 2.

Let's see your FoodDehydrater do that!

i have a small closet, if i bought a couple pounds of silica, and had the shroomies on screens with a box fan blowing on them (like the above pic), do you think that would be enough to keep my rh down in my closet?

last time i filled my closet up with drying shrooms + fan it was humid as fuck, and i believe it slowed down dry time and thus more loss to maggots.
