well I voted for the Dead, but I don't think they are a jam-band.
also, why no Medeski,Martin and Wood on that list? Again, they aren't really a jam-band either, but (in my opinion) they beat out everybody on that list except the Dead, JGB, and (maybe... it depends on the show) Phish...

I would say that the Dead were one of the first "Jam Bands". I hate genres but I had to use that term for simplicity's sake. No MMW because I didn't think of it. My little brother loves MMW, I think they're OK, but as far as jazz goes they're not something I listen to a lot.

How do you have offshoot 'vida blue' on there, along with Unoriginal Mcgee, but not powerhouse Government Mule?

the dead wasnt a jam band, in the sence of what is typicaly a 'jam band' in that they are more of thier own type of music, which is a combination of various types of music. ie rock, blues, folk, country, jam band.. etc..all rolled into one, and all inspiring the others. Jamming was just a part of what was going on back in the day, like if you listen to janis, jimi, alman brothers, etc, they were semi jam based, but the dead took it to the extreme. for the most part, the dead was one of the few bands that made it out of the 60's, who didn't die out, or get stupid as the rock bands of the 70's rolled in. Like they were the only one's keeping the spirit alive. That's why thier's all the jam bands today. instead of just adding a new style to thier music, they took that single style as a base, and created music off it, and it became popular.

I don't like jam bands. I don't consider the Allman Bros/Mule/Dead to be jambands though.
