sharing a DSL connection?

Simple question:
i have DSL, and i'd like to be able to be on both computers at once (sharing connection).
How do i do this? My brother just had me purchase an Ethernet hub last night, but it doesnt let us use the DSL at the same time. When both computers are connected it says there is a problem involving a computer with the same IP address on the same network or something.
should i have bought a router? it didnt look much different from the ethernet hub.

Yes, a hub is a layer one device and simply broadcasts to all ports at once. You should have gotten a router, which is a layer three device. It will handle IP management for you through DHCP and you should not have any conflicts.
If you wish to stick with the hub, you have to get whatever PPPoE client is on your main box to work properly with some sort of internet sharing application... In a word, this is "painful". You are much better off getting a router.

Either lean about ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) or Buy a hardware router. You can get a decent router offline for less then 40$
For ICS you will need to have two Ethernet cards in the computer you are using to share the connection and a Crossover Cable long enough to go between the two computers.
Hope that helps, Google can get the the rest or your answers

Get a router
Your network will be secure right out of the box, as the router (using NAT) acts as a firewall. You can use file sharing and it will not be visible from the internet, and your network should be immune to most of the big internet viruses going around these days. Once you have your router in place, you can remove any software firewalls from the computers (Norton Personal Firewall, Zone Alarm, ect).

*cringe* Assuming that NAT is protecting you the same as a firewall would be like trusting a cotton shirt to stop a bullet. Granted, network address translation does help protect your machines through obscurity, but it is most certainly not a good firewall solution.
(I tend to be a bit of purist when it comes to firewalls and network security and think more from the bank end than from the home user end... what you said is fine for the home user, but not for the bank...)

"what you said is fine for the home user, but not for the bank"
Well he sure the hell is not a BANK so why make him read all that? NAT will protect against WORMS and hackers don't give a shit about your computer. My computer gets pinged by bad people 100s of times a day, I have NEVER been hacked with my 34$ NAT enabled Router.
