PF jar Qs from a newcomer
    #3845058 - 02/28/05 02:18 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I'm new to the forums, but I've read through a lot of the info in the teks and faqs. I've come upon some problems regarding some incubating pf jars. First off, I think they were screwed up from the start due to too much water content. Not sure if it was from mixing too much water into the ingredients (BRF + fine verm), but it might be due to something with the cooking procedure. I wasn't clear on whether there should be tape on the holes in the jars during pressure cooking in addition to covering them with tin foil. One pf tek said just foil, so I went with just foil. Would this have caused extra water to seep into the jars during cooking? Also, the jars have taken a very long time to even begin to colonize due to less than optimum temperatures. After I was able to relocate them to a consistently warmer place, i started noticing slimey brown growth toward the bottom of all three jars. I read up on contams and it fits the description of wet rot. Should I throw all the jars out, or are there ways of salvaging them? Or can the mycelium fight the wet rot? Does the bacteria causing wet rot produce toxins that can be distributed within the mycelium? Thanks for any help you can provide.

sounds like you put too much water in the substrate... if water was sloshing in, the ones on the bottom would have more water in em than the ones on top... if water was dripping in the opposite would be true...

For starting a new batch, should I keep the holes taped during PCing? Wouldn't pressure from heating gases inside the jar cause tape to be pushed off? I don't know if water sloshed in for the old set of jars. I think that extra water that went into the jars occured to equalize with the water level outside the jars (the jars had about two inches of water around them, and there was only one level of jars in the cooker). Maybe I should elevate the jars above water level?

I dont think the tape matters all that much. Just so long as water doesnt get inside. I personally had profesional masking tape on mine. But if you think you added too much water then that is most likely your problem.

A slick newbee way to avoid contams and water -

Put one piece of foil under the lid, screw on lid. Place another on top, and then pc. When you go to innoc, just remove top foil, pierce the under layer, inject, then tape shut!

Not one contam when using the above procedure. (So far, anyways)

Follow the teks on the basic cultivation guides and you will be fine in the future. the key is to follow them to a T and to be very sterile. Use double tube tek for incubator. and good luck

I always tape the holes with cloth tape then cover the top with tin foil before placeing in the cooker. keeps water from dripping off the top of the pot into the jars.
