can you dry overly wet rye jars?
    #3844646 - 02/28/05 12:58 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Just a quick question I couldnt find an answer to by searching, I have 2 quart jars of rye innoc'd with a taz syringe and they seem a little wet and I am not seeing any white after about 10 days. I was out of town so I couldnt do anything earlier, can the jars be salvaged? Maybe have the jars briefly open in the incubator? Thanks for any help you can give

If it's only slightly over-wet, I'd think you'd still see some mycelium. What is your incubation temperature? How long did you wait after pc to inoculate?

You'll probably still see myc but it can take a while longer. No way to dry them. Start new ones learning from your mistakes. You can keep those around for another 2 weeks before giving up on them. I've had jars not start up for that long...

Might as well save them if you've got jars and room.

But you most likely have bacteria and/or yeast.  Smell one in a sterile environment, you'll know.

Hmmm, if you're asking about opening it in your incubator, you probably don't have a sterile environment.  Just do the best you can, they're probably trash anyway.

Ya they smell bad, my incubator is at aprox 82-84 degrees, and I innoc'ed the jars about 16 hours after I PCed them (they were totally cool). I think I am going to trash them in a few days if I still dont see ANYTHING, any advice for the future? I soaked, simmered, and PCed ? la Magash's tek. Live and learn I guess, thanks for the help

I've had very good results w/ Magash's rye tek, but one thing I think some people overlook is letting the rye drain COMPLETELY after simmering.  I think alot of people don't let it drain long enough, then get water content issues... Just me .02 cents :stoned:
