Mold: Attacks from the inside out?
    #3842945 - 02/27/05 08:35 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I'm in the fruiting stage of my first grow and think I might be the victim of contamination. I lost one jar during the colonization process--it was rotten, green, and smelled terrible. My other seven jars made it through and are now in various stages of fruiting.

I pulled the first mushrooms tonight, roughly 12-24 hours after their veils had torn, and five days after pinning began. I cut the stems and caps in half to speed the drying process and noticed that the interiors of many were greenish-blue in color. There were no outward signs of this colorization; I could only see it upon cutting the mushrooms in half. The color does not look anything like the rotten jar I tossed, nor does it look anything like the pictures displayed in the FAQ. At first, I was hopeful this was just bruising, but, since mold can kill, I don't want to take any chances.

Of course, I'll be heartbroken to have made it this far, only to lose out to the nasty stuff, but I'd rather be sure. Is this greenish-blue tint the beginning of the end for my little guys? I can post pictures if necessary (may take a few hours to get set up).

Thanks all,

RD

I also meant to add that the caps of some of the mushrooms were beginning to turn quite dark in color. Again, I can post pictures if needed.

Thanks,

RD

OK, pictures are up. They're a little blurry--they were taken at close range--but still illustrate the discoloration on the interior of the stems and caps.

Thanks,

RD

one way you can tell is by using some tissue, rub it on it a little, if its mold itll come off, if its bruising it doesnt in my experience...

most likely bruising tho..

  Thanks, everyone.  As mentioned, this is my first time, and I've been on pins and needles trying to make sure everything goes OK. I've heard, anecdotally, that bluing is good, but given all the nightmarish posts about contamination, I wanted to be sure.

Thanks again!

RD
