My first cakes...and what is that?! **pics**
    #3842862 - 02/27/05 08:18 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I put my first three cakes in a 19qt rubbermaid terrarium a week ago. So far pinning is not apparent. I haven't cold shocked them yet. I'm an unexperienced cultivator so still reading and getting more info. I'm curious as to what this blue/green(?) blob is on this cake...contamination? Some water has dripped on the tops of the cakes, wonder if that's the cause. There are also other blueish marks that look like some kind of bruising...can water condensation cause this? All help/adivce/tips/thoughts and ideas appreciated...
Oh yeah, notice the cracking on the top of this cake. This one was right under the tubes pumping air from the aqua pump, think it might have dried it out or something...will it be ok, watchya think?

From the crack in the middle (is that a crack), it probably bruised, if it's flat and not fluffy, then it's jus bruising.

That's probably not contam. If it were, then it will be either grey, green, or yellow (and rarely, red.) If it is flat and blueish, that is just where either yoiu touched it, or where it fell onto something else.

I see bruising here, although the pictures are fuzzy.

I have noticed this same blue-green tint on the interior of some of the mushroom stems and caps I just plucked tonight. (Below is a link to a picture; it's blurry, but shows the discoloration.) I am hopeful this is bruising, but fear it is contamination.

You know that's the psilocybin oxidizing and not a contamination, right?

Man, I have been bummed out and then reasured three different times on this thread. Now kinda confused...guess I'll just let them go a little longer and see what happens. Plus, they've been in the set-up for a week. Before I found this site, I wasn't exactly sure what was up with cold shocking and never really heard of "dunking" b4. In consequence, the cakes did not recieve this treatment. Too late to try? Best method if not...? Sorry bout the blurry pics, no digi yet, have to use web-cam....and thnx for all the posts guys...appreciated.

Well, if you see baby mushrooms, Pick them off and then Dunk...If there's babies then u may have enough water, But i see a crack in your cake, I fear that your cake might die from lack of water, Mushrooms are 92% water, Don't deprive em, Personally I'd dunk A.s.a.p....And a cold shock might help jump start it into fruiting stages and make that baby pin

right on Gnostic..ty for post. yeah, it's definitely cracked, been like that for a few days now. is there a good link to the best method of dunking after they've been removed from the jar?  and cold shock them by putting them in the fridge over night right?  nice avatar btw

i fully agree with gnostic, envid. it looks dry so dunk and cold shock ASAP, like i just told you how. i dont think that "blob" is a contam, it looks like bruising to me, but the pictures are also a bit fuzzy. as for water/condensation being on the cake its ok, ive had it happen to me too before. i believe its not something preferable, but its not all that harmful... usually when water is on my cakes it gives them a yellowish tint where the water was, so i dont think the blue is from the water.

also, try to keep the cakes as far as you can from the air tube, or turn it down (if you can).

Yellow=Myc. piss
Just byproducts lol

And you can just put it in the jar and fill the jar with hot spring water (tap is if all you got and think that it's good water...you can always boil it and then wrap with foil and put in the fridge until its cool...Anyways, fill the jar till the cake floats, then put the lid on and screw, watch out as some water will spill out, just means that it's fully submerged :smirk:
Might want to put tape on the holes if ur worryed about it falling over in ur frigde and spilling everywhere.

I love my avatar, thankx

Good luck, let us kno how it goes and I promise, it's just a bruise....Probably won't get fruits where it's really blue but damnit, always a good idea to try

now that's what I like to hear!  but this dunking thing is gonna have to wait till tomorrow as i have to sign off and study right now for a test I have tomorrow.  :frown:  will pick up some bottled spring water and cold shock for about 15 hrs.  they are gonna be left unattended for five days...ya think they'll be alright with just the perilite method for humidifcation or should I scramble to hook up my ultra sonic humidifier i just bought?

pearlite would work fine, just put it into a drainer and run water over the whole thing until it runs out the bottom steadily. then wait till its a slow drip and lay about a half inch to 3/4 of an inch on the bottom of the terrarium.

you're going to want ventillation of some sort for that long of time alone, so either find a way to fan your terrarium (simply "fan" it with anything, like the top of the terrarium about 2-3 times a day at most or hook up some kinda airflow to it, which i cant really help you with).

Hmm...Well cakes need lots of Air and Humidity....If you can make it to where it comes on for a mintue or so every what...6 hours?...Then yea, they should be fine...If you don't give it air for 5 days..

And perlite is the king of humidity when it comes to being by itself.....If you did ur perlite right then the perlite should be fine...Just mist the sides of your fruiting chamber down well, till the point where droplets roll down... Good luck, get on that dunk a.s.a.p, the life of ur cake Depends upon it...

alright, i'm now convinced and motivated to dunk before i go to sleep tonight. probably not going to do very well on the test anyway. I have an aqua pump hooked up connected to two hoses which run into the chamber, pumping air in 24/7...will this suffice in substitution of "fanning" with a lid? Also, I have a bottle of distilled water available right now...will this work instead of spring water? And, one last time, I keep the water in the jars for the duration of the cold shock right?
