it's the shadow of the person taking the photo on a distant cloudbank/fogbank. the halo caused (i think) by diffraction of light around the edges of the photographer. nice pics.

Yepp. These things are known as the Brocken Spectres. They appear when the sun shines from low behind a climber who is looking down from a ridge or peak into the mist. The "ghost" can also appear to move because of the movement of the cloud layer. This type of spectre can appear not only on misty mountainsides (or from an aircraft), but also in lower altitude locations.
One of the unique aspects of this phenomenon, is that unless the climbers are standing side by side, each climber will only be able to see his own specter.
According to legend, the name came from the unhappy circumstance of a climber on northern Germany's highest mountain, the Brocken, in late 18th century. Working his way across a narrow precipice, the climber was startled by the sudden appearance in the nearby mists of a human figure with a ring of light around its head. Frightened, the climber fell to his death.

The Mount Brocken (or Blocksberg) in Germany is also known as the place where witches held their Walpurgis night feasts. I wonder why

thanks for the explanation, ivi! incidentally i am not a climber and haven't seen the effect myself. though i have seen similar "halo" effect around the shadows of aircraft i have been in. in fact any low flying aircraft will cast a "halo" shadow on the ground (or on clouds too i guess)

And that my friends, is how the phrase, "scared of his own shadow" ironically came into play.
