come on now mike, you're going to tell me that kung fu has no chin na techniques? it is an element of martial arts, not a discipline all by itself. he was talking about hyper-extending the elbow and i thought i'd give him a few pointers on how to do that, as well as lock them into position without the tendon and ligament damage. truth be told: i advocate muai thai and ground submission for real life application, though i do have a reverence for kung fu. the chinese have been doing this since 527 a.d.

just cool it. If someone comes at you, even without a weapon, you don't know what could happen. I once read about a couple of navy SEALs who went to a bar when they were on leave, and a half drunk guy started giving them hassle. They, obviously, with all their training, knocked the guy down and started to leave the bar. He then sat up, drew his gun, and shot them both dead. I practice martial arts, I'm reasonably fit and I work weights, but there are too many variables in a street situation to make fighting anything more then a last resort. What if a guy jumps you outside your house, you smack him down and he runs, you left feeling pretty good about yourself. What if he then comes back that evening with six mates, and weapons, and starts on you again? Then, my friends, you're fucked. Running is always the best option, the Hollywood image of the "one-man army" could get you killed.

it all depends on where you are.... and what the guy has to rob you with, or if there is more than one of them........
if you are in Amsterdam, and the guy has a little knife, actual experience, you tell the guy to go fuck himself, and act aggressive, I've found that if people realize your not going to be a soft target that they loose the will to rob really quick. of course this would be different in every situation.
if you know any self defense you should put that into play as son as you feel threatened, or as soon as possible. running is a good self defense and it's not really chicken.
if you have to fight try to remember that you should keep yourself as hard a target to hit as possible so don't face your opponent broad side, turn to the side, and keep your weight even, this will make you more stable and harder to get at. and if you must fight remember there are no rules. and if you can disable your opponents limbs, he can't fight. if you can blind him, he can't fight.
soft tissue areas, eyes, throat, nose, ears, balls..... it only take some thing like three pounds of pressure to rip some ones ear off!!! just grab firmly behind some ones ear like you were taring a piece of paper off of the wall, and with a downward movement, pull as hard as you can, even falling with your body weight, rippppp , mugging over.
you can use your key as a really effective stabbing device, put in you hand, between you middle fingers, with the butt of the key in your palm. one hit to the eyes, throat, groin, or under the arm pit. ball point pen could work just the same.
roll of quarters in you pocket can be held in your hand like a blackjack, can hit somebody with tremendous force, much more than just bare handed.
and it's not illegal to carry a ball point pen, or a roll of quarters, or an extra long key.
i say just make sure your shoes are in good order and run like a mother fucker. a good reason to not wear sandals.

Something that could be useful, if you know what a 9mm beretta looks like. If you grab their hand and pull the barrel to your chest and push the barrel into your chest as hard as possible, the slide will cock back a fraction and they wont be able to fire it. It will hurt too but, id rather have a broken rib from the pressure than be dead. Totally situational but, you never know when it may happen.
EDIT: I wouldnt recommend it though, just give them your shit and cancel the credit cards on your walk home.

Stopping a mugger with a gun or knife is quite possible. However, even if you are very experienced it is VERY risky. Try simulating a knife encounter with a magic marker and see what you look like after the fight. More than likely you are covered in slashes, even if you disabled your attacker.
Generally most attackers can be deterred by body language, and by verbally engaging them as a threat.
Never feel obligated to talk to somebody. If you feel your personal space is being violated, it probably is. When people make me feel threatened, I hold my arms up in a seemingly defensive posture, and suggest politely that I'm in a hurry, and can't talk to them. This is actually my fighting position, it is effective because it puts my tools (my hands) between me and the face of the person who is threatening me. If they keep threatening me, and invade my personal space, I will punch or eye jab them. Then I will push past their arms, grab them by their neck or jacket, and pound them with head butts knees and elbows until they fall down.
Check it out
Knowing that stuff has made me feel a million times safer, and generally I find most fights can be avoided by drawing the boundaries of your personal space, and engaging your attacker verbally. If not, beat the living crap out of them. They knew they were threatening you with violence.

see what he did with the quick smack to the face, you can do that slightly harder with a little muscle, you'll addle the head slightly and break its static resistance. then when you follow up with the elbow (try to follow up quick and hard, follow through your leg, your hips, back, and put all that energy through his head AND try to make BOTH impacts occur as closely as humanly possible to simultaneous) The setup hit makes the head free of the bodies stance, so the head absorbs all the blow and the neck gets trashed. the fight begins and ends with that move. just randomly mix up knee, head and elbow strikes until he stops getting up. practice with a dummy so if you ever NEED to use it, you wont have to think about HOW you're going to do it..
avoid taking it to the ground if you're outnumbered, just smash what you have to to get out of a pinch and either get them all in front, or all behind and run.

The problem with martial arts is that you have to spend a fair bit of time training at them before you will have anything useful in a street fight. While some people might not mind devoting a few years of their spare time to kicking pads and hanging out with self righteous wankers in order to be prepared for an extremely rare occurance (a mugging that you can actually stop), I'd rather be devoting my time to getting sex and destroying my brain cells. I mean why the fuck would you bother training all that time, so that you can wail on some street tough, who will probably end up coming back at you with a bunch of his friends. Not to mention that in the incredibly likely event that the cops get involved after the fight, you'r going to be facing a few tough questions and probably prosecution for carrying and using a concealed weapon, given that most countries have laws against having a knife in your pocket. Ironically enough that's in order to stop people from using them to mug people. Regardless, It's a better idea to stick your phone and most of your cash in you underwear if your walking through a rough area. give them the cash you have left in your wallet when they start to threaten you, and all you've lost is a cheap wallet and some cards you can replace. If you're one on one and you think you can take them (being on a lot of speed helps), take your wallet out, and as your giving it to him, throw it in his face. He will instinctively reach his hands up to protect himself as he's probably wired on adrenaline and jumpy as all hell. Then either bust that long neck bottle you were carrying over his head, or throw him into a wall/onto the train tracks or something. Nuff said.

i carry a knife on campus when i'm out late. if nothing else, it's been a good conversation starter and chicks seem to dig it haha.
i would fight if my assailant wasn't armed (with no reservations), but if he was, i would just give him what he wanted. not worth the risk.

Well, if you see someone before they are close to you, definently make eye contact, not just a glance, a hard stare, most everyday muggers will not deal with someone who will be easier than your average joe who will hand anything over. I was in Detroit about a month back with my girlfriend and another friend of mine. We were wearing an army outfit as we had just got done playing airsoft. Some black guy on the street was standing around outside of the Technofest we went to see and as we passed by he spat visibly into the air and started following us. A little ways back. Now, when you have commotion and shit going on, whos to say he doesnt have 3 people across the street also walking a little ahead of you. So as we walked pass this guy, and me and my friend both saw what he had done, we just kept walking but turned and looked directly at him. He stopped dead in his tracks and went pack to where he was again. But if someone gets the jump on you, drop your shit and run. You do not know if they have a knife or a gun. And if you do see a gun, if you drop your money, they aren't likely to fire. A murder charge is a lot different than robbery of any kind. Plus if you throw your wallet or money behind the assailant, they may look as it goes by them, giving you a split second to scram. Now I am a skinny guy, so if you are bigger, I cannot really think of any advice. I am picturing this through my view. Keep out of tight areas, don't play hero, but don't get yourself in a tighter and shittier situation than you are already in. They usually want the money, not your life.

I was hitting up a dead show in atlanta, passed by a small group of people just talking, didnt think much of it, nodded and walked by, a block or so down some guy comes out of an alley to try and sell me a 'gold nugget' he came across, it was a painted rock. anyway while this guy is running his con I hear a couple guys coming in from behind, first instinct is to get the 'blocker' out of the way, bounced my coke bottle off his noggin, back then they were glass, none of this plastic shit, anyway he went down and the people across the street at an all black club came pouring out, I turned to look for the other guys and they were high tailing it
I got cheers from the guys in the parking lot, my friend just stood there
A trip to new york with a buddy of mine almost ended in a mugging, I had about $3500 in my pocket, went to a store to buy something, pulled out the cash, paid and left the store, someone decided to follow us, my friend mentioned it so we rounded a corner went a block and around another into a dark alley, it was painfully obvious that we were not from there... so we went about halfway in and waited, the guy following us started down the alley and we started back at him, again, the assailant ran
confidence is key, without it you're a mark, paying attention to the sounds around you as well as the people, be observant, look for the guy that's shifting his gaze away to avoid your attention
