I use my coleman camping stove. just hook it up to a large propane tank like one for a bbq, instead of that coke bottle sized one... good idea w/ the electric portable though... why exactly do you need a portable one?

Those electric burners are crap. You need a labratory hot plate. Great for pasteurizing 20 gallon trash cans of straw:

Thermolynes are great and cheap. I have this model:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=48729&item=3876531294&rd=1

300 degree celcius, and 40 dollars max price. Shop around for those and you can find good deals on them on ebay all the time.

the hotplates (cheap) cant take the repeated use, the knob seizes up and eveuntally you are left with only 2 heat settings high and unplugged, I had one for pcing while watching TV and this happened to that, great for making hash oil although

They are not cheap quality. They just can be found cheaply. I was pointed to this particular model by agar who has one and has had one for quite some time. This one is obviously older but still works just fine.

Sorry to Jersey up this thread, but my question is tangential.

I've read that you should use an electric range, but I'm not sure why. A friend has a gas stove, and wonders what kind of problems he will run into if he uses it to sterilize a PF-style jar.

If this has been covered a million times, I'm sorry in advance.

What you didnt like the brand I posted? It's probably the best there is, what more do you want? I can list a bunch of shitty ones if you want so you have lots of brands to look at. Only one will be worth buying though, and its one I already linked to along with the site to buy it. ebay.
