Gigantic Cake Idea!!!!! need your input
    #3838296 - 02/26/05 07:52 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

well i have an idea for making a very very large cake. my casing that i was using got a little dried out and started receding from the sides. because of this there was some side pinning even though my sides are covered in aluminum foil. its in a perlite fruiting chamber. now since its receding from the sides couldnt i theorietically just take out the large casing and set it directly on the perlite? this way mushies could grow from the sides also? i just think this so you can increase your pinning area. it would be like a huge ass cake. lol tell me what you think.

Do you have casing material on the bottom as well? If so, then it's possible...but I wouldn't really suggest it. It would only be useful if your bottom layer is dry too, because you'd still have to mist the top casing layer until you started to see pins anyway.

I would patch it and mist the top casing.

You could give it a shot...I can't see it doing a whole lot of good, but experimentation can definitely be worthwhile.

well the good i can see is that you increase the areas avaiable for pinning and growth by like 40 percent. know what i mean. so this way they could grow off the sides. all those sides together make alot of space for possible growth. i just need to find a way of getting out of the container without splitting it in half. any suggestions? coul i dunk it and then take it out whiles its being dunked. idk if it works id be a cool thing.

Available pinning area only partially effects your actual yield.  Water content and substrate thickness are major contributors (among a few others).  An even pinset is also desirable with casings so that you have a decent flush...this is going to be damned near impossible with a naked casing.  You might end up with a bunch of short, ugly children that tend to hide in the corner.

Lemme know how it works out though, I've never actually heard of anyone trying this.
