Too late for DEC?
    #3837103 - 02/26/05 03:13 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I dunked & rolled my cakes, and now they sit in my PMP, still not fruiting. It's been a couple days. The mycelium is growign all over the vermiculite that I rolled on it like crazy. Is it still too late to DEC this? Or is it even worth it?

Nope, add verm to the top and bottom, it seems to help. All the monster cakes I've ever seen have had PLENTY of verm to get them there.

I dunno what DEC'ing is, but you might want to try cold shocking them overnight. Set a few ice packs up against the outside of your PMP overnight, and unplug the aquarium heater, if you use one. This normally helps getting stubborn cakes and casings to pin.

I keep it cold in my room, windows open, fan on and such. How wet should my bottom DEC layer be and the top one also?

As wet as they can be without being saturated.

Theres a tek around here for it, Double end casing. It's where you add a layer af vemiculite to the top and bottom of your cakes, and you keep it wet.

As much as you can pile on top. Theres no exact amount...verm holds in moisture, the point is to keep your cakes as wet as possible all the time without being saturated. Put on as much as you can fit/care to afford.

You shouldnt squeeze it and it doesnt matter how wet it is when you apply it. You need to apply it and mist it until its full of water but not so water starts dripping off or forming puddles. Thats over saturated. Just keep spraying the verm all the time.

Do a search for "cold shock" or "cold shocking" It's not my method, but it does seem to help expedite pin set. I was under the impression that you had expierence with this type of casing, and that this strain was just proving to be particularly stubborn. If you are having other issues, such as an improperly hydrated casing layer, that could also be an issue. You say you keep it cool in your room. You don't want it cool all the time, just one cool night to get the pinset going. Cubensis fruits best when temps are in the low to mid 70's, but it is a highly tollerant species to fuck ups.

Tub in tub type terrariums regulate temps the best, in my experience.
