Pressure cooker question
    #3836311 - 02/26/05 12:00 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I just bought a new pressure cooker for my first attempt at growing using PF jars. The problem is, it didn't come with one of those trays to keep the jars off the bottom. My question is, can I just put the jars in the cooker without one of those trays and just slowly raise the heat? Will the jars crack? I'm using those half pint Ball mason jars...Thanks for the help

Thanks for the warm welcome. So I just put a towel at the bottom and then put an inch of water in? Or do I put the inch of water in and then the towel?

I put the inch in after the towel, because the towel will absorb a lot of the water. I'm a noob, but it seems like that way is a safe bet.

Yes, that's the way to do it without a canning rack. Don't let your jars touch the bottom unless you like cleaning up hot vermiculite, brf, and broken glass messes.

Make sure your towel is plenty wet, and don't be in any kind of hurry to open up your pressure cooker after you pc your jars. You're less prone to contams if you let the jars cool in the pressure cooker.
