To case or not to case?
    #383285 - 09/01/01 11:40 AM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Okay, AFOAF is on the verge of birthing 8 colonized PF tek style cakes into 2 ultrasonic humidified styrofoam coolers ala MMGG. She's considering using one cooler for 4 cakes and maybe case the other 4 cakes in the other cooler. Only one problem . . . how?

She read the casing tek somewhere in the Shroomery, it doesn't say how long to sterilize the verm. Also, how long until she covers the mycelium up w/ verm? Is that right away, or after they've spread out some? Oh, yeah, when does the case go into the terrarium?

As always, suggestions will be tried in the order received. Thanks in advance for sagely advice.

Check out the Hongus` Casing Tek at mycotopia.net. That should answer most of your questions.

Vermiculite usiually doesn?t need sterilisation, you can moisten it and put it for 10 minutes into the microwave to be sure.
You cover it up imidiately after crumbling the cakes into the tray.
Then put a aluminium foil over it, leave it somewhere warm and after the mycelium begins to poke through the surface (after a few days) put it into the terrarium.

Do case. I will improve your yield. Half and half sounds good. You will be able to compare the difference.Read this, I found it helpful. Some people do not sterilize their casings. I found it very helpful to sterilize all my casings for 45 min to an hour in the pressure cooker. No contams in my casings since I started to do this. For vermiculite I only do a half an hour. When I didn't sterilize I would always end up getting cobweb mold or green mold. If you don't sterilize it at least pasteurize it in the oven.Best of luck

Oh. as far as when to initiate: Some people cover their casings and give it 1-3 days in the dark to colonize. I just cover it long enough to see the mycelium peeking through the casing. I then patch the area where It first peeks through and put it in the growing chamber and initiate fruiting.

Or like anno said Microwaving it will work. Just be careful because vermiculite gets really hot!!

That helps a lot. Some casing teks use a bottom layer of verm, some don't ... which is better?

Case with out a doubt - the whole idea of casing is to increase yields. I have never (fingers-crossed) lost a casing, but ive lost plenty of birthed cakes, so its not worth the risk. As long as you are just using verm, you should have no probs - just spray with distilled water with a bitta h202 to be sure that no contams arrive!

Guess I'll throw my 2 cents in here. Casing is definitely the way to go, a bottom layer is not necessary. One thing I will mention that has not been said yet is - case with Coco Fiber. This stuff is the best! I swear by it now after losing 50/50 casings to contams. Coco colonizes much faster and is not prone to contams. If you can find it, use it. After the third or fourth flush just break up your casing into small bits again and recase with more coco. I'm on my six flush on some of these coco casings. Just last week I pulled a 3 oz (wet) shroom (eq) out, the cap was 4" wide and took up my whole palm! Do that with a cake. Best of all - no pasturization is needed. Good luck, and happy shrooming.

Do you spray the H20/H202 solution onto the cases when they're in the terrarium or during prep?

(I hope it's not during prep b/c the casing's done)

BTW, thank you everybody for your warm encouragement and good advice. It's up to God now.

I do it after case prep is complete and before entering terrarium. You can also mist a bit before placing the top layer (verm or coco) and then a little bit after placing the top layer. It's up to you.

Peace,
MAIA

i heard that you aren't to put caseings into the same terrarium as cakes. is that true? is it for potential contamination reasons? also where can i find out more about this coco caseing stuff? like what is the procedure and what are the mixtures, h2o coco peat moss? what ratio?

How can you say coco fiber is not prone to contams? I just finished putting my first attempt at casing in the trash. Now, granted I made a few dumb mistakes, like misting with plain water instead of h202 water, but I lost 6 cakes. (someone play TAPS please). Luckily most of us have enormous amounts of patience, so I'm simply going to start over tonight by innoculating 6 more cakes, but this time I am only going to use 3 of them for the casing. Hopefully this time I will be okay, but coco fiber has nutrients and thus is most definitely more prone to contams than a verm/verm casing. that's just my unprofessional opinion of course :)

The brand? Of coco fiber you mean? No, I used gro-brick. THat's what everyone recommends. And my contam started as cob-web mold and got down the sides of the casing.. *sigh*.

when i started using the teks you mentioned, i started by simply birthing my cake onto a bed of verm that had been moistened with H2O2 about 8 or9 to 1 with water. then after a week or so has passed, simply invert the cakes. this way you end up with a double cased cake.

i keep jars of sterilized and soaked verm, which I prepare along with my substrate

Try single casings in 4 inch flower pots man...  you`ll be surprised how mush more shrooms pop up and how many more flushes than a cake out in the open..... Just wet some verm and squeeze it so most of the water is out but not all. Stick that in the bottom of a  4 inch flower pot about a half inch,  then you can take a whole 1/2 pint jar cake and place inside ..that way some of the casing material hits around the sides.. even hydrating the cake more.. . or you can crumble it  which ever you prefer and add that. Then case over the top with 50/50 verm / peat moss  same wetness as before  wet and squeeze excess out. cover with tinfoil so it`s dark wait about 3  to 5 days and peek at it..  you should see mycelia infiltrating the top. Then take off the tinfoil and place in the terrarium, ..  in another few days to a week you should have pins !!!!!!!! I like it for single casings because if you do lose one the the dreaded green mold  you only lost one jars worth of work   try it I think you`ll like the singles...  I got about and 1/8th oz in the first flush per flower pot  that`s dry weight    good luck
