Boot from a windows 98 (or dos or whatever) bootdisk and at the dosprompt type "fdisk /mbr".

Are you keeping your linux partition? Why not install grub or lilo on the MBR? How will you boot linux if windows is on it?

And how will you get to lilo if Windows writes the MBR? Why not use lilo to boot Windows?

i just use a disk to boot linux... set your boot devices to check floppy first, and check second to wherever windows is installed. that way if you want to run linux, just pop in your disk, and if you want to run windows just leave the disk out. takes a bit longer, but i like it.

To place a new MBR on a drive with winxp you need to boot from the winxp cdrom and hit 'R' when prompted to enter the recovery console. Once you get to the command prompt, run 'fixmbr' to write a new Microsoft MBR to your drive.
