Now I'm confused : Nelumbo Nucifera vs. Nymphaea Caerulea
    #3833538 - 02/25/05 03:17 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

I'm very, very confused at this point.

1.) Nymphaea Caerulea - this is ACTUALLY a Blue Lily, correct? It is called the "Sacred Egyptian Lotus" or "Blah Blah Lotus" but in reality it is a Blue Water Lily, correct?

2.) Nelumbo Nucifera - ACTUALLY a lotus, perhaps called the "sacred water lotus". Apparently it's not actually blue, but pink and/or purple. So really it's just a water lotus, not a blue lotus.

I'm confused. IAmShaman sells both, and they say that both are psychoactive, and I don't know anymore which one I should be looking for. They sell Blue Lily Flowers, and they sell Blue Lotus Stamens and Petals.

Which ones are worth purchasing? Are they both worthwhile? There is just too much conflicting information online, and I'm getting terribly confused. Apparently they are not related.

Nymphaea Caerulea comes from the family Nymphaeaceae

and the Nelumbo Nucifera comes from the family Nelumbonaceae

So really, I need to hear more about this. I'm confused.

I understand your confusion..those too seem all mixed up in vendors sites.
But, I believe that it comes down to" Nymphaea Caerulea is better. They contain similar alkaloids, but Blue Lily, Nymphaea Caerulea, has more. I believe that this is not only was this the Lily close to the Egyptians hearts, but the lotus highly regarded in India. I had half an oz of it at some point..it's great, very mellow, a nice smoke..subtle relaxation, good feelings.

Yeah I read about how the Egyptians really enjoyed the Nymphaea Caerulea, but I wasn't sure how it matched up with Nelumbo Nucifera.

And when you said "I believe that this is not only was this the Lily close to the Egyptians hearts, but the lotus highly regarded in India", did you mean Nelumbo Nucifera was highly regarded in India? Or Nymphaea Caerulea. Because you said "lotus", and when I see lotus I think Nelumbo Nucifera since Nymphaea Caerulea is a lily.

You want Nelumbo stamens. Nymphaea is the species that had a much much lower potency (subjectively). That being said I would like to try Nymphaea stamens ;p

Caerulea is what people are referring to when they talk about the traditional Blue Lotus, and Nucifera is often called the Sacred Lotus. I've heard that they do contain some compounds in common, such as nuciferine, but possibly psychoactive compounds are found in one and not the other.

IAmShaman definitely does confuse the issue with their wording, as does Erowid by putting these two different species in the same vault, but from what I hear Nucifera needs more testing, as Caerula has been used by many.

pretty much everything in the flower of both are eaten/smoked/consumed as a form of tea, smoking Nymphaea is far from the best way to consume it

Nymphaea Caerulea

Nelumbo Nucifera

Yeah, I was wondering if smoking Nymphaea would work or not, considering it is less potent. I might just have to make a tea out of Nymphaea and smoke the Nelumbo stamens.

steep the petals in a glass of warm wine, I wouldnt say its less potent, but smoking it is a waste

Iamshaman once had "Nymphaea Caerulea pods" as a product.. and the picture clearly showed Nelumbo nucifera pods.. the kind you can buy at florist shops. Nelumbo Nucifera is never blue.. so its pretty devious of him to call it Blue Lotus. I'm sure he loves the money though.

Nelumbo Nucifera petals aren't as potent as Nymphaea Caerulea. The stamens of both are more potent than their petals, but i'm not sure which stamens are more potent. Definately needs more testing.

Also, whats the deal with Cielo Herbals "golden lily" that they sell for $60 an ounce? I'm thinking its Nymphaea Mexicana, which I have a wholesale source for. Maybe i'll request a sample and tests its activity.

The absolute best way to ingest Nymphaea Caerulea is to soak it for a long time in alcohol. I put a bunch in some whiskey, left it to sit for about a month, strained it.. took two shots.. WOW. It was amazingly euphoric and stimulating. Bordering on hallucinogenic (visual perception greatly altered), which is very interesting.. since it was thought that the egyptians used it as a hallucinogen. Definate synergy with alcohol. Try it!

I'll be working on both soon, 2 ponds, 2 types of flowers, one pond is shallow enough to allow one to take over the whole thing, the other has fish and is about 20 feet deeper so the edges will be their growing area

Haha, I meant Nymphaea Caerulea.
Yeah..I think lotus is more of a layman term that has been applied to at least these two plants. From what I understand, Nymphaea Caerulea is the goods.

Nymphaea Caerulea is actualy a water lily but my understanding is that they are more potent than Nelumbo as well, I know that ingesting it after steeping the
petals in wine are quite similar, although milder, to MDMA and have heard that
smoking it gives a very different effect

not as of yet, I'm going to try scuffing the surface on a waterstone today and
putting them into some small net pots

Personally I find Nelumbo Nucifera to be much more potent than Nymhae.
I have smoked a 26x extract of both and found that Nelumbo extract was good for four sessions while nymphae barely took me above baseline.

Can you smoke a non-extract of Nelumbo? I'd like to just buy Nelumbo stamens and smoke them in a joint. That would be my ideal way to do it.

And I'm going to have to try to put the Nymphaea in alcohol. I've heard a lot of good things about that.

exactly what part of the flower is best to use? petal or stamens? and how long of an alchohol soak is necessary? also, do you reccomend blending your petal or stamens to a powder prior to the soak or is it really not that necessary? i've never had any experiences with lotus before but based on the way you guys speak of it, it definately seems like something to check out. what would you say is a good dose? sorry about all the questions, but you caught my interest

I usualy just smash them a little and stuff them in the wine (petals mostly) and
let it steep for about a week and then filter it to remove the solids, I use about
3-4 flowers to a bottle and a half glass gives me a vrey nice feeling, a full
glass is just..... whoa.
