easy bulk straw pasteurization idea -- comments?
    #3834638 - 02/25/05 07:53 PM (19 years, 26 days ago)

Pasteurizing large amounts of straw is sometimes a pain. More straw means more hot water, and maintaining pasteurization temps usually requires a constant source of very hot water. Pasteurizing large amounts of straw without a propane burner and large can is impossible beyond a certain point, limited by the amount of hot water that can be produced in ~1 hour.

What about pasteurizing straw in an oven, without an oven bag? Oven bags limit the volume of straw to the volume of the bag. Does anyone think it would be possible to pasteurize a large amount of straw in a very large tub with water in an oven? Ovens provide relatively precise control over the temperature, and they can maintain this temperature indefinitely! Any comments, suggestions?

Large pot on top of the stove.

They used to make canning jar pots...large blue metal pots.

Like this.

If you need something bigger than that...I suggest doing to a cooking supply and buying a bigger pot.
I have a stainless steel one that is 2 times bigger than the one in the picture.

brb...I'll take a picture.

I picked up this large stainless steel pot at an Asian Cooking Supply business in the China town part of Seattle.
cost me $20.00

They had pots there that were 4 times larger in size.

My heavy duty GE stove seems to be doing just fine...after years of mycology.

Or I'm just lucky?

Well, thanks for the info. We can all agree that stovetop pasteurization works. But giant pots just aren't big enough! Let's talk about inside the oven methods. Does the method previously suggested sound feasible? Why not?

What's the oven tek? Oven bags or something else? Can you give some more details.

Big galvanized trash can with a hot plate. Or a big galvanized trash can affixed with a water heater element in the bottom of it and placed up on bricks.

On top of this model hot plate:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ssPageName=WDVW
They can be found cheap on ebay as you can see. A water heater element works as well, agar could give you info and directions on that.

I can do 1x1x2 feet of compressed straw, chopped in a blender in a clothing bag in the trash can at a time (enough for 2-4 large bulk bins). I fill up my two pressure cookers (you can see them here):

with HOT water out of my tap and dump it into the trashcan ontop of the hot plate turned on high (300 degrees celcius) and then fill them both up again with hot out of the tap water and put them on the two big burners of my stove on high. If you put the lids onto the pressure cooker the water will start boiling incredibly fast. Add the two pots when then get boiling or almost boiling along with the straw and enough hot out of the tap water to get you to the right temps. You figure boiling waters 212 and out of my taps is about 120 so I can rasie or lower the temp of the water using that and the hot plate control. It takes me about 30 minutes to heat up 15 gallons of water to 160-175 degrees. Total of 2 hours to pastuerize like a 1/6th of a bail or something.

The oven bag tek:
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23705

But the oven bag tek is meant for poo/compost usually. You have to get the water content right first, then bag up the straw with no water and then cook in the oven. It sounds like you just want tou put a big pot of water and straw in there. That would work but your oven isnt going to hold as much straw as a big trash can.

Trash can + electric burner is a great idea. Never considered this because the teks always called for a big metal barrel.. A $20 - $30 metal trash can is just genius!

LOl, i thought that the oven tek was when you turned the oven on, then opened it and knocked up ur jars, the rising heat would make the air move away and thus keep contams away when knocking up jars, always works (kinda) for prints....huh....gues i better go read up and see what ur talking about...and roadkill...how do u maintain the temps in that big ass pot? Wouldnt it be cooler towards the top and hotter towards the bottom? I wanna try straw soon, that's why i ask, might get a pot or just might go buy a can and try what agar posted up awhile back

You could go to a local chemical company and get a free barrel.

I told them that I needed one for my outboard boat motor.

Just wash it out really good.

No it actually didnt have anything to do with the pressure or the heat. The trash can you see leaked water with only an inch of cold water in. Trashcans just arent meant to hold water (rain). If you can find a washtub then you wont have to do anything to water proof it but otherwise youll need to run silicone along the bottom and side seams. It works fine full of water now though heated up, no leaks. The silicone needs to go on the INSIDE though (the pressure pushes it into the cracks). I did both but only cause I tried the outside first and it didnt work. Just regular "100% Silicone" works fine, holds up to 400 degrees.

well, regular size.. just never seen a giant pot that's big enough. In fact, the biggest ones I've seen are like 25 liter... any bigger than that, a stew pot maybe, are pretty expensive! right?

Got away with rubbermaid tub pasteurizing about 35 gallons of compressed, very well chopped straw the other day...we'll see if it contams.

My first time was in a rubbermaid with boiling water mixed with tap water, about half and half, with no thermometer. I did two bags this way, 5 tubs, no contams. You can easily get just as lucky as I did so dont fret yet. Especially if you used alot of spawn.

Large stew pots are like 10-15 bucks at walmart if your PC isnt big enough. Havnt seen pots much bigger, but theres always washtubs and trashcans..

I used a coolbox, the last time I pasteurized. Just pouring boiling hot water over the straw. The colder straw makes temperature of the water drop till 70-80 F.

Apply the lid and wait a few hours. That was that 90 grams dry harvest.

The day im gonna need 35 gallons of straw for a single casing.. ehmm will do it batchwise.

No problemo.

Was this for a single casing? Perhaps I missed that somewhere but if so, I'd suggest splitting it up into more. If you lose it to contams its done. I mean hell I think I only use about 15-20 quarts of straw for a casing like the black one:

and that gives you a good 3-4 ounces a flush for a few flushes. Were talking like 8 times that much right for 35 gallons? Hell my trashcan is only 20 gallons.... I probably did about 35 gallons in two runs the other day but I made eight casings with it, not one.... Bigger then them black tubs too...

It is maybe my bad, he dont mention that its for a single casing. I meant for a single grow (can be multiple casings).

To start 35 gallons of straw at the same time, will need you (depending on ratio) 7-10 gallons of spawn. Less if you dont want a fast spawnrun, which I like.

That is like 30-40 quart jars, my incubator cant cope with that!

But with buying/making a few double tubs, one can increase fruiting surface easily. Also its easy to increase incubatorspace, by buying 2 30 gallon rubbermaids for a huge TiT... ;P

But atm that all would be overkill, I dont need THAT many mushies!

Greets,

Overkill? i'm not aware of the defintition of overkill in this hobby  :tongue2:

Well whatever I had for straw, probably like 30 gallons, did 7 tubs as I said. Each tub is 30 quarts, about 2/3 filled so probably about 20 quarts. 10% of that is 2 quarts per tub, which is what I did. So it only took 14 quarts to spawn to all the straw. I think on two I used 3 quarts though. The two amazons took about 7-8 days to colonize but the 5 creepers I did 2 days later were done the same time, in about 6 days. Its not as fast as some people but a week is fast enough for me.

I do also shread my straw in the blender and I stack up all 7 casings on top of eachother with bricks on the top one to compress them all down too.

Then you throw them in a big trashbag and leave it somewhere, then go around making up a bunch of fliers telling people whats in it and where you left it and leave them around somwhere. You could also get a job at a chinese resturant and try to get the task of making the tea. Then throw in some "magic" batches every now and then to livin things up. Or rent a helicopter and take your trashbags full of shroomies and fly over a few cities dumping them from the sky. And then of course there are the little unsuspecting elementry school children.

Or maybe they'd quit law school and join a commune.
