I need the name of an instrument

It's a strange musical instrument consisting of some kind of antenna. When you move your hands around it, it generates cool sounds. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

No it's electrical. I think the antenna measures changes in the electric field when you move you hands around it and translates it into sound or something.

i know exactly what you're talking about...it's called a theremin. some have only one antenna, and can be used as a controller for other devices, but i think the original one has two antenna, one for pitch and one for amplitude, and you control the two simply by moving your hands around them. it used to be extremely popular for making sci-fi noises back in like the 50's i think. it's a pretty old instrument actually.

yep that's it. Thanks for the link and name I think it would be fun in a trip or in real life to play with one of these.

Nice idea, but it sounds like a violin being played by a drunken idiot with broken fingers...

honestly it takes a pretty skilled person to be able to play "real" music with it... you need to know just the tight spot to have your hand to get the right pitch. i've heard recordings of whole songs with it and it's really incredible.

Yeah, I listened to some recordings of songs with it in one of the links above... I thought it sounded terrible.
I totally understand what you're saying though, it's like trying to hit the right spot on a fretless instrument, only in 3D... gotta be a real bitch.
I just don't like the way it sounds as a result of this difficulty... too imprecise.

I tried playing one once and yup, it's really hard to sound like you know what you're doing. same with violin, actually...
I've always wanted a theremin, and one day I'll have one. mark my words.
