abortion, stemcells, healthcare, science, for starters.

In what area is Bush not a social conservative would be a much shorter question.

He's not fully socially conservative on guns, which is a negative for him, but he is socially conservative on drugs, abortions, the environment, stem cells, science, gay rights, etc., which are also all negatives. His social opinions are without a doubt his biggest glaring drawback to me.

I don't mind a president having different social opinions than myself... but, I resent a president that tries to force his social opinions and values upon me. A president should do what is right for the country, not what is popular with 50.001% of the country. When the country is split 50/50 on something, the president needs to support a middle of the road, freedom to choose and make mistakes position.

...or 52% of registered voters for that matter. 62 million people, that's only 25% of the population.

yeah the other 75% or atleast a majority are under 18, and can't vote. As for the others that didn't vote, too bad. I don't like a lot of this either but those who vote tend to tip the scales.

So 29% of the populations opinions doesn't matter because they're minors, and the remainder who didn't vote had their chance. I really don't feel bad for people who complain and not vote.

Not so... most felons cannot vote, for whatever sick reason.

depending on what they did, I see no problem. I'm not very sympathetic to criminals. I don't have the numbers but the "felons" that can't vote, I would imagine, is a small number of the populace.

That all depends on the crime and who decides that they're reformed?

Lets say some guy robbed a bank. He's like an other-wise good and well behaved Sean-Penn-esque guy who got caught up in the wrong crowd but honestly wants to reform. He has a simple heart, and finds solace in reading the Bible. Crime for him appears to be more of an intellectual struggle for him, it is evident that society can save him.

How's that?

he's not a good guy if he robbed the bank and knew the consequences ahead of time. Personal responsibility is the key, good guys have it.

Quote:

Sean-Penn is a fucking idiot.

Quote:

Deflection of blame, it's not him, it's the crowd he hung out with. Sorry, but no one in the world short of holding a gun to my head could talk me into robbing a bank. Peer pressure is no excuse.

Quote:

forgiveness has nothing to do with voting rights. I could be friends with a felon, that doesn't mean that he should gain the right he gave up because he's now a new man. Besides, many hate the bible so it makes no difference.

your hypothetical is becoming more hypothetical. Only one who would know this would be him, it still doesn't take away from the fact that he/she knew the consequences.

> That all depends on the crime and who decides that they're reformed?

The crime has nothing to do with it.... it is about keeping the people that want reform from being able to legally voice their opinion in the form of a vote.

Lets say some poor soul is growing a harmless plant in their home that happens to be deemed a great threat to national security and social harmony in the eyes of the government. The government sends a well armed group of thugs to tear the poor guys home apart looking for the evil plant. The government then tosses the poor guy in jail, for life, because of the violent nature of his crime. The guy, being a convicted plant growing felon, can no longer vote for peace loving representation.

Preventing felons from voting has everything to do with the people in power wanting to ensure that they retain their power and absolutely nothing to do with deterring crime or punishment. When was the last time you heard, "Don't do drugs or you will loose your right to vote!"

Even rapists and murderers should have the right to vote for those that represent them politically.

before you start on a "what if" compaign concerning someone growing pot, I mentioned that it all depended on their crime to me wether or not I think they should be allowed to vote. If you murder, hold someone hostage, rob someone, put people into harm etc. then you get what you get.

absolutly not.

Edit: the only rights murderers and Rapists should have is basic human rights. In my eyes they should either be put to death or stay in jail forever.

see above, that's what I meant about some crimes. Mind you, this is just my opinion of how i'd like to see it, it in no way matches what the Govt wants. Then again I want rapists and murderers to suffer.
