Quetion about smearing agar plates

Hi all.... I want to return to the old school of agar/agar pertri dishes.. and I remember most of the process... heat the loop .. cool loop in agar. etc. My question is . after you have spores from the print on the loop. do you just drag it across the top of the agar?.. or do you actually drag it through the agar. severing the surface?.. Thanks in advance

accross the top
sometimes my loop goes bellow the surface and they still germinate
