What to buy?
    #3831726 - 02/25/05 06:36 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Alright computer geeks. I've decided to buy a new system and give this one to my kids. I want one bad mamma jamma of a new PC. Any suggestions?
I want one that does everything including walk the dog. :tongue2:
Seriously I'm looking for the best. I don't know alot about the latest and greatest so any advise would be appreciated. I don't really want to spend more then 5 grand unless I have too. I just bought my wife a new laptop and now it's time for a toy for me. I want one that won't be outdated in a year(if that's possible). I use my computer alot, especially for school. I also want to start a massive collection of high quality GD downloads that doesn't take a year to do.
Thanks ahead of time.

You're looking for a new desktop?
Are you willing to put it together yourself? It's not that hard and'll save you a bit, but it'll take a few extra hours.

Edit: the real question determining how much power you need is whether you intend to do any serious gaming. For most applications (playing videos or music, office apps., etc) a super-powerfull PC with top of the line graphics cards, etc. is a waste of money.
The only applications I can think of off the top of my head that require a super powerful computer are games and (scientific) simulation software.

The main key to getting a computer to last a while is to keep the software clean from spyware, addware, viruses, etc. and to replace any hardware that breaks - in my experience, frequently the optical drive.

Dude get a dell!

Dells are the best things you can get that aren't Macs, but then it all depends on what you want to be doing with the computer. If you're just surfing, doing office work and playing games, get a dell. If you are in to any kind of art, music, or digital photography, you need a mac to get anywhere.

Peace! :goodluck:

I'd love to get a Mac, but it probably wouldn't be compatable with
my campuses software and system.
Any suggestions on what model Dell? Also is Dell better then Gateway?
Support is a big consideration for me also. I want a manufacturer that offers good support. If my shit breaks down I want a helicoptor dropping off
techies into my front yard in 10 minutes. j/k

Seriously I appreciate the advise folks.
As you can tell i'm not a computer person.

Dell's customer service, if you ever need it, will make you CRY ChinaCat. Everyone I know who gets Dells has problems so so quickly. If you were a hardcore gamer or something with a lot of cash to burn I'd say get an alienware (alienware.com) but that's for the over-the-top and ridiculous among computer-users. I just can't recommend a mac enough, no matter how much you'd say you can't get one!

I got a dell and one of the "memory modules" thats what the guy that barely spoke english called it.i think its a ram card or something. stopped working in 4 days. however he did guide me thru fixing it step by step and they replaced it.id say thier customer service is good when you can understand what they are saying.

I can get one i'm just worried about the headache of the different operating system. I grade alot of papers on my computer and there all microsoft format.
I guess I could talk to someone at the campus computer labs about this. I don't know much about this area so mabye theres something that could help with this problem. I do know some Mac owners and they love there stuff.

Hell can you believe that somebody gave this thread a  1 mushroom rating. Sheez I didn't think it was that dumb.  :tongue2:

Where I live, there's a pretty good independent computer shop. You can have them put together a machine, you get a warranty and all that. Since they're small and highly depenent on their customer base, and since they are owner opperated, support is first rate. If you can find a small computer shop in your area, best to get them to do a small job, or at least go there to get a feeling for the place before asking them to build you a machine.

Chances are, you don't need a super powerfull $5000 machine. Just get something new and fast, and you should be fine - save the extra $4000.

Something else to consider, if you have a local shop build your machine or you build it yourself, is the amount of noise the computer makes. Buying a case like the Antec Sonata can make using the computer a much more pleasant experience.

Buying from Dell or Gateway, you won't get as much flexibility on the selection of parts, and support will of course not be local. But, they're usually pretty decent computers and you'll probably save money over having a local shop do the work.

I'll give it a five to offset their strange disappointment.  Microsoft Office X (that's the Mac version of microsoft office) has come a long way and can convert any PC-created Microsoft document without any of those weird symbols...I have to download PC-made word docs off my school's BlackBoard system that they have set up for individual classes and never really have a problem.  I think it's easier than ever for PC users to switch to a Mac...with the new Mac MINI you can keep your speakers, mouse, keyboard AND monitor and buy a top-of-the-line Mac for 500 dollars, and it's like the size of a glorified paperweight!

I was hoping not to spend that much, but agian I know little about new computers. I'll look into having one built. I'm getting ready to head out in a little while and look around.
Thanks for the advise
