Crop Circles or Mushroom Circles which came first?
    #3831515 - 02/25/05 04:03 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I think mushroom circles came first. What do you think?

Have you ever seen a mushroom circle before this post?
What year did you first find of a mushroom circle while hunting?

Yes, I have. They are quite common, at least whereabouts I've wondered in my hunts.

These circles are also known as fairy rings or pixie rings because in folklore they were thought to be caused by fairies dancing in a circle during the night, wearing down the grass beneath their feet. Check out this painting called Fairy Ring by Walter Jenks Morgan (I want it on a T shirt )

The rings may grow over ten meters in diameter. And even if no mushrooms are present, the underground presence of the mycelium and  the nutrient-poor substrate it leaves behind as it spreads radially away from the center, can be detected as withering of grass directly above.

Sorry, I don't have a camera, but here are some more photos of fairy rings that I found on the internet:

Seems I have read somewhere- concerning timelines- that Marasmius oreades specimens are found as old as 800+ years- very old indeed for any livng thing. And they can be quite large (that's to say have an enormous body of mycelium). Very cool stuff. Wonderful post, BTW- ivi- smashing pics.
