Clean Air
    #3831181 - 02/25/05 02:05 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I live in a basement suite, don't have many windows (4) and there ground level, 1/4 opening windows. Summer is alright, because I can open them up and get some air flow. But winter isn't quiet as warm as summer and I smoke alot of reefer.
My constant one plugged nostril has lead me to believe that my air quality is sub-par. I've been thinking about spending some money on an air purifier. But I'd like some feedback, what's your experience with air purifying?

my ex had one of those air purifiers from the sharper image, i forget the brand name, but it wasn't a very high end model. she smoked marlboro lights in her room constantly, and you couldn't tell unless you saw her doing it.

it had a low pitched sound to it, really just a slight hum, if anything. it never affected my sleep at all, and was very easy to tune out.

I have a question in reply to the same subject...will working in the flow of an air cleaner/ionizer work like using a flow hood?Like maybe with some modifacation perhaps?

ionic breeze

ebay

cheaper HEPA filters are also available from big stores like walmart...but they are louder and probably less-efficient and effective.

Sorry, but the Ionic Breeze is a piece of shit. You can do a quick search on google on how utterly useless it is. Consumer reports had said this a few months ago:
"The other electronic-percipitator model, the Sharper Image SI637 Ionic Breeze Quadra Silent Air Purifer, proved unimpress in our tests. Ads for this unit tout its silence and miserly power consumption. Both are attributable to its lack of a fan. Bit so is its disappointing performance; we found almost no measurable reduction in airborne particles"
No doubt it was ranked last.

So for something that people claim is that good, it doesn't have a fan. To clean the air, the air must move through the purifier. Most air purifiers with fans will tell you how many Cubic Feet/Minute(CFM) it moves, yet I am completely unable to find these figures for the ionic breeze.

The top rated air purifier by Consumer Reports is also an electronic percipator model, but it has a huge fan on it. It can move 280-410CFM depending on the speed setting. I bought one and its awesome. Its only a little more expensive than the whatever ionic breeze you buy. The filter needs to be washed, but you just put it in the dishwasher and rinse the pre-filter.

yeah, I've never used one before - just read a few reviews that were positive. I have a simple HEPA filter I got cheap - it works ok.

According to consumer reports on the ionic breeze they "found almost no measurable reduction in air particles."

I personally run a hepafilter that I bought for $80 at wallmart. It works great and if you attach a clear plastic bag to the output and cut a couple of slits in it you have an instant ghetto flowhood.
