No pins yet. Why??
    #3830056 - 02/24/05 08:58 PM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Ive had cakes in the fruiting stage for a week and a half. I have no pins yet. But what ended up happening is that the cake started receding off the sides. I think it might have been due to lack of moisture. When it receded off the sides i got pins on the side. So i cut out that square inche or so and inverted it so the side was now the top. Any tips on how to get the top of my cakes to pin. I have light on it for about 3 - 4 hours a day. but it seems as if the cake is always dry. my setup is a double tub. so i dont see why it would look a bit dry. any tips

you need to read up on dunking and light cycles. both seem to be wrong. so go read now.

Using flourecent lighting?

What is your RH? For cakes it should be %98-%100.

Also what is the temp, 64-74 is ideal for fruiting.

well my humidity is unknown. im using a double tub setup though. im gonna get my hygrometer tonight so i can check what the humidity is on the inside of the tub. my temperature is at 72 degrees even. im using a regular lamp light. i do 3 - 4 hours because i heard that more than a few hours a day is too much.

Well a double tub is a tek for casing straw/dung. What source of humidity do you have?

Optimal Light Cycle is 12 hours on 12 hours off.
An easy source of humidity is Perlite.
Really you seem to be underinformed. Get reading the teks for cakes.

ahhhh. so thats probably why that isnt working to well. ok well what im doing is im misting the sides of the tubs once a day. also im misting parts of the casing that are getting kind of dry. so i think heres what im going to do. tell me if you think it will work. get an 18 gallon rubbermaid container. then perlite the bottom of it. take off the top tub of the double tub and but the casing in the rubbermaid. make the lid transparent. sit and wait.

Wait, you said you were doing cakes. I'm confused. is your casing filling your entire double tub?

also. even though its been it the fruiting stage for over a week, i did not dunk the casing. would it be a good idea to dunk the casings seeing that there is no pinning or anything like that.

Well the receding of the casing from the sides means that it's losing moisture. This is inevitably going to happen but is reduced with proper humidity. I'd work on your light cycle, and what's the colonization look like on the top.

Or wait until a more experienced grower chimes in.

well the top is about 90% colonized. its not very thick. but colonized. it was perfectly white until day six of fruiting when some of it started to get a golden tint. I elliminated the possibility of it being contam. also there is a little blueing on the corner of the casing. i think that its just dry. would you suggest a dunk.
