Flat Cake Tek Version 1
    #383015 - 08/31/01 09:56 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Supplies:

1. caserole dish(glass only) with plastic lid( pyrex brand)

2. saran wrap

3. vermiculite

4. 3 fully colonized pf cake 2 weeks after 100%colonization.

5. needle

6. distilled water

7. fork

Directions:

1. First sterilize your area with lysol disinfectant sprayed in the air. then use rubbing alcohol to sterilize your table. finally use rubbing alcohol to sterilize yourself and any tools u are working with.

2. presterilize vermiculite for 25-60 minutes at 325 degrees.

3. now birth the jars. first scrape of verm layer and add three jars per flat square caserole dish.

4. remove any primordia or pins that have started growing on the cakes.  now break up cakes into small pea size pieces. you pretty much crumble the cakes.

5. Next, you mix distilled water with your vermiculite. allow the verm to be damp not wet. maybe only a drop comes out between your fingers when a handfull is squeezed.

6. now use the fork to evenly pack down the mycelia. make sure it is as even as possible this will help in the future.

7.now spread the verm. over the cakes evenly, covering the mycelia entirely. now use your hand to pat down the vermiculite so that it is nice and snug.

8. use the saran wrap over the caserole dish and poke 10 or 12 holes randomely in the saran wrap. now label your trays. This image shows the trays covered with saran wrap, verm, and labeled. ready for incubation.

9. Finally incubate your containers in total darkness for 3 to five days until the mycelia is thick and looks like a fully colonized pf jar again. the pieces that you broke up will grow together and look like one cake now.

10. Do not allow light in incubation room and do not use heating pads.

11. Once the dishes have grown through. birth them by scraping the top verm layer off and then use a fork CAREFULLY to pull the cake away from the edge of the caserole dish. Now flip the cake upside down on top of the saran wrap and on top of the lid to the caserole dish.

TIP: WHEN PLACING THE TRAY INSIDE THE CONTAINER A GOOD HINT IS TO TAKE A THE PART OF THE SARAN WRAP HANGING OVER THE CASEROLE DISH LID AND STICK IT TO YOUR TERRARIUM WALL. THIS HELPS THE MUSHROOMS TREMENDOUSLY. ANOTHER TRICK I LEARNED BY ACCIDENT.

Here are some pictures of results using the flat cake tek. also found in the pictures section of this site.

The flat cake tek, finally.

One question: isn?t this like a half-casing tek? You basically do the same thing as a casing, except for the top layer of verm... Am I wrong or ? Please explain...

To me it sounds like he is deep scratching but instead of digging in with a fork he is removing the whole layer.

Anyway I posted a newcontest
hope to see all of you there

Those are some really cool pictures, I love the one with all the flat cakes fruiting! Very nice indeed.

Good work!

I?ve seen your tek allready and i still think about the amount of shrooms on top, there?s a huge area wich is covered with mycellium but still lacking shrooms, their fruitbodys are excellent though, that?s a plus.
I think the "problem" is related to the area sorrouding the cake, that?s where they grow because the height of the mycellium in the center of the cake spreads (using that height pressure) the cake water content to the side. You can try this, between step 6 and 7 before covering with vermiculite grab a knife and stab it till the bottom like cutting it, you?ll make several lines with the knife from one side of the cake till the other side, in each line you make gently push the cake aside and put your moistned vermiculite trough the small "canyon" covering untill the surface and let it close, i would recomend like four or five lines like this to each cake. The intention is to make that side humid area inside the cake itself and promote more abundance of fruitbodies. My 2 cents.

Peace,
MAIA

why not just layer several of these cakes together or at least make them much thicker.
also like the idea of the verm
reservoirs as previously stated. maybe even put layers
of cake and dung(or straw, etc) and cake on top and keep covered till
the dung is also colonized?
Also as previoiusly stated this is just basically a casing
tek minus the casing, but i def. see potential. Water being the main concern

newbie here..

I still haven?t grasped the concept of casing yet..

will someone please tell me if the caserole dishes need to be placed in a terrerium (after birth) to grow shrooms, or can they grow just by sitting on top of the dish lid in regular room temperature? If that is the situation, then this has to be by far the easiest way of growing.

i don?t see the point too, case then uncase......
your yield will probably better if you leave the pans in a terrarium, without scraping the vermiculite...

ok, but if the casing is done correctly then I don?t have to keep them in a terrarium? and don?t scrape the verm either hey? just let em grow and I should produce some results?

Try the tek before you dis it! Many of you can say what you want and may think you know it all. Just try the damn tek. you don?t know the results until you try it.

Hi!

Exactly how centimeters or inches flat should the cake and the verm layers be?

And what cakes should I use? BRF cakes are good?
