Questions, questions . . .
    #382958 - 08/31/01 07:59 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

My friend is attempt PF Tek for first time . . . please read the following and let me know if she should worry:

- Innoculated 12 halfpint jars PF tek style
- Jars are tightly sealed w/ innoculation holes taped down
- Colonization began day 3
- Rhizomorphs covered entire jar by day 11
- Today is day 18, all jars have been in 85 degree water
bath since day 11

Only one jar has a few primordia (the only one not in the water bath) and the rest have seemed to stall out completely. She's concerned about:

1) Is CO2 too high? Should the jars be vented? If so, how?
2) Should she wait until primordia before birthing?
3) Are the cakes getting dried out, is that why they're
not growing at all?
4) Is she getting ahead of herself because it is, after all,
only day 18?

Thank you . . . all suggestions will be tried in the order in which they're received.

Are the jars 100% colonized, just most not showing pinning?

Its been said (the real truth has yet to be discovered) that the mycelium needs a drop in temps to begin primordia formation, so the one outside the bath would have experienced this fluctuation while the others have not. If they are at 100% colonisation you can go ahead and birth them into a terrarium. They will begin pinning withing a week from the terrarium. It is not necessary for a cake to invitro-primordiate, in fact all the cakes I've ever let pins form into seem to have a high majority of the pins abhort when birthed anyway.

18 days is a good speed for colonization, now you just need to birth your jars.

1) JArs can be vented by loosening the lids a 1/4 turn, removing the tape off of the holes, and turning the jars on their sides.
2) You can wait, but most don't. I've heard that if you wait, you get bigger yeilds on your first flush. But then again, others say negative things about waiting, like the guy who posted above me.
3) Do the cakes look dry to you? When you birth them , you'll be able to tell. Dunk them if they're very dry.
4) 18 days is a good timeframe. Just tell her to be patient, I'm sure everything will work out.

Thank you for the help

Some of the cakes may be dry b/c they look deformed in the jar (not perfect jar shaped, but with recessed areas that make it look kind of like a cube). Should she dunk them for 6-12h in water? Is tap okay?
