Casing Question

hello i need some help with casing i went out and bought vermiculite spagghum moss or whatever its called and fine washed sand do i need oyster shell cause i couldnt find them and i need to do my casing to do i was just thinking of using the 3 i got will it work

the oyster shell is just for extra nutrients, you can live without it.

sweet and then do i just put a layer of it all my stuff down and put in the oven for a couple of min i have 13"X9"X2" cake pans

I though the oyster shell was also to help level the ph of the casing. I think you can also use egg shells.

I would use just the vermiculite and sphagnum moss. Sand gets heavy and dense when it's wet and might present some difficulties when the mycelium is trying to poke through your casing layer. As for oyster shell providing extra nutrients...no, no it doesn't...it acts as a pH buffer. The casing layer is not designed to provide any extra nutrients as the substrate is already fully run with mycelium.

Yes, this is how I understand it too. Does anyone know how severely yeilds would be diminished if no buffer was used. Is it just an added bonus? Also, I can't seem to find in any teks exactly how much oyster shell to use proportionally... Thanks guys! :thumbup:

doesn't take much, like a tablespoon/casing, unless your doing some large bulk casings, then u might need a lil more

Don't use the sand.

Use the peat moss and verm...and add some lime to adjust the ph balance.

You can buy Hydrated Lime at any garden center...Home Depot, Lowes, etc.
