Casing: to pasteurize or sterilize...

I would very much appreciate your views on the best route to "cleaning" a casing mixture. Is pasteurizing best, or sterilizing in a pressure cooker best, or is this, in the end, just splitting ends? I've read up quite a bit, and have the technical capability of doing either...
Thanks for your advice!

Some prefer pasturizing, other sterilization. You will get a lot of differing opinions - which is better. IMHO, so long as the casing mix is treated, so-as-to-be contaminate free & ph balanced to around 7.5 (if need be), either works well.

im not sure but i think the idea is to sterilise it unless ure using certain ingredients such as dung. dung has alot of benificial bacteria wich would be destroyed during sterilisation. in that case pasturisating would be better...

Casing material is one thing & generally non-nutrative.
Substrate material such as "dung" is another & nutrative.
The referance was to "casing mixture". Not "substrate" mixture.
Unless, initial post is confusing the two?

well there realy is no difference aside from the nutes and the name... is there? since the poster is a fellow noob there is a good chance of him/her not having made the distinction yet... it can be confusing:
i just colonised a pf-jar and put it in a trey and filled it with verm/wormcastings 70/30 then covered with verm... what would i call that?

The casing material contains no nutrients, so there is NO reason to pasturize it.

I went through the same thing recently. It was contamination of the casing layer that had me concerned. But, when I went to get my verm, it was wet. It was sitting for 3 weeks. See, it had no contams So, I just microwaved it for 9 mins. and rehydrate(and mist) with h2o2 solution. NP GL

My friend has had success growing from cakes (uncased) as well as cased grain, and I am just looking for continued refinement on the treatment of casing. Just to be clear, my initial post is not confusing the substrate with the casing. Thanks for the responses.

So, to further refine the question:
Here is the issue. A casing layer provides moisture and protection from humidity fluctuations for the substrate below. It also can provide stimulating micro-organisms as well as salts and minerals. Some mushrooms are dependent upon these soil micro-organisms for growth, and some merely benefit from them.
The question boils down to this: does P Cubensis benefit greatly from these organisms (pasteurize) or is it not a large benefit (sterilize)?
Secondarily, does the casing layer repel contams with greater efficiency after being pasteurized or sterilized, or is it equal?
Thank you!

i think it was answered dude... no1 pasturises casing mix...its only for hydrating the myc... u want it sterile.
pasturising happens with dung based substrates cuz of the organisms in dung.

i'm pretty confused on this post. reading everything is confusing more. i'm just gonna leave it at this... #1 sterilize casing mix.(i sterilize my vermiculite i don't use casing mixes vermiculite is my casing) #2 i pasturize my straw(pasturizeing retains nutrients and keeps bacteria non active for at least 2 weeks that should give time to colonize) i hope this clears thing up a bit... if not sorry i'm out of ideas.

You have the right idea--that'll work fine. However if I were you, I would look into using mixes because yields with just a vermiculite casing pale in comparison to say a 50/50+ casing. If you're going through the trouble of doing bulk substrates, you may as well do your casing properly, imo. Good luck man!

I will be mixing 45%verm + 45%peat + 10%calcium carbonate and soaking it it a 10:1 mix of H2O:H2O2. I will then strain it and place it in the microwave for 5 minutes.
I think that will more than suffice.

Exactly what I did. I think this is the easiest/hassle-free way to do it besides not doing it at all.

Hold on folks! There is a lot of misinfo and confusion here. I think at least one person needs a trip to the glossary.
Pasteurization means treating with heat, usually around 160 F, to kill some but not all living organisms.
Sterilization means treating so that all living organisms are killed.
When people say casings are non-nutritious, this is misleading apparently. They should still be pasteurized or sterilized as they are plenty nutritious to many contaminates.
So, pasteurize or sterilize? This has been a debatable decision for years. All the pros say pasteurize not sterilize. You won't find a single mushroom farm in America that sterilizes there casing mix. I fall into this camp.
You can sterilize if you want to. I think it leaves the casing more vulnerable to contamination as the harmless microbes left behind in pasteurization are no longer there to hold off more harmful contaminates.
Obviously lots of people get good results from either method. Some people find sterilization easier than pasteurization.
