Growing HBW
    #3826227 - 02/24/05 07:13 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone(my first post)

Just wondering if anyone here has any experience at all in growing hawiian baby woodrose, and what it involves. (im a complete idiot at growing anything, Ive never grown anything of any shape, sort or description before) Or if anyone has any guides to doing it. I live in sydney, australia so the climate is generally hot and humid, although sometimes cold.

Also am I allowed to ask where you can purchase these seeds from a store in sydney (dunno if you can discuss sources here, even if it is a legal plant..so if this is agaisnt the rules please remove it or ask and I will) because Id rather not order them online, being able to find a headshop in sydney that sells these seeds would make my life 10x easier!

HBWR is extremely easy to grow in the Australian climate. All you do is scarify the seed by soaking it in boiled water for 24 hours or nicking the end opposite to the eye with a file or scalpel. Then just plant them out into free-draining potting mix.

I recommend Shaman Australis for seeds (the Fractal variety are good). They have a range of payment methods, cash/MO/visa.

There are also forum members who would be willing to set up a trade if you wish.

This is a picture of my plant. It's about two years old and the only courtesy I extend to it is the occasional hosing down of the leaves on really hot days.

Yeah for Australia! I've been to Sydney, and it's beautiful there  I heard that nicking the seed and letting it soak in a warm fish tank worked really really well. Just make sure the fish don't eat it

Keep us posted on how you're doing! I have some seeds of my own, but I don't want to plant them just yet as I may be moving... anyone have any idea how long these seeds will keep, and how the best way to keep them is? I have them stored in the original plastic bag, inside of a glass jar in the frige. Is this a good or bad idea? This is how we store our seed at work, so I thought I'd give it a try

:goodluck:

That photo makes me want to move to aus. I had to butcher my plants into cuttings for the winter.

One thing I learned since my seeds wern't growing was, you must knick the seed in order to grow. This is cutting a small hole in the seed opposite to the side where the growth hole is(i.e. the smooth side).

Just take a knife or I use a scapal and carefully cut out a section of the seed without cutting yourself.

By the way, they dislike full sun (may be ok in Sydney, not QLD) so keep them in a position that receives either filtered light or partial shade. They also like moist soil so water regularly, applying an organic fertiliser such as seaweed extract or fish meal every two weeks.

Good luck!
