Some excerpts from that article:

Quote:

He is also laying the groundwork for testing LSD as a treatment for dreaded super-migraines known as cluster headaches.

Quote:

For now, however, Halpern isn't planning to pursue addiction therapy. He is more interested in another medical use for LSD and psilocybin: treating a debilitating condition known as cluster headaches. These attacks appear to be caused by swelling of blood vessels in the brain and are worse than migraines. Sufferers say the pain exceeds that of passing a kidney stone or giving birth without anaesthetics. They affect about 3 in every 1000 people sporadically, and 1 in 10,000 chronically. "There's a tremendous potential need for this," says Halpern, who investigated the problem after being approached by a patient group.

Many patients get little or no relief from painkillers, but some claim that small doses of LSD or psilocybin can alleviate the headaches and even prevent them from occurring. Halpern was intrigued; LSD is chemically related to ergot, a naturally occurring compound that constricts blood vessels, and the derivatives ergotamine and methysergide are commonly prescribed for migraines.

Halpern and his Harvard colleague Andrew Sewell are now gathering evidence to persuade licensing officials - and themselves - that LSD and psilocybin merit a clinical trial. Sewell has gathered more than 60 testimonials from cluster headache sufferers who have treated themselves with LSD or psilocybin.

There's tons more stuff on this at the Clusterbusters website --

http://www.clusterbusters.com and also at the M.A.P.S. website.

As is the case with all research into psychedelics, the government (which throws around money like it was water for research into the sexuality of the Giant Squid or population studies of lemmings or whatever) has no interest in funding this clinical study, so we're dependent on private (tax deductible of course) donations. If you'd like to help out, go to the Clusterbusters website and buy yourself a shroom necklace, or just donate directly through either M.A.P.S. or Clusterbusters.

This study will provide concrete peer-reviewed data to show that LSD and psilocybin have a legitimate use as medicine in treating a physiological medical condition, thus undermining the government's rationale for keeping those two compounds listed as Schedule One Controlled Substances. And the study is not being done at some obscure naturopathy clinic with no accreditation, it is taking place at MacLean Medical School at Harvard University.

As the article states, we are still going through the lengthy process of obtaining all the necessary government permits, but those permits will be obtained.

Thank God for Harvard and psychedelics. Seems they've always been doin' the research.

Good article....Halperns a narc though. Anyway, it's good to see all the strides in psychedelic research these days. Hopefully after the dark days of Bush we'll get the legalization process moving.

Are those shroom pendants by any chance being made in the Dominican Republic?

I'm guessing that's a tin based pewter alloy which cost about $9 a pound the last time I ordered some. (a few years ago)

Judging by my WAG of the size of the neclace, I would guess 1lb would make about 30-50 pendants.

I believe pewter can be cast in plaster of paris.

Metal molds are faster, and orders of magnitude more reuseable than plaster.

If you want, I think I might could get you a set of steel molds.

Silly doctor. It really proves that no matter how much education you receive you can still be a stupid brainwashed American. She ought to read a history book or the law, because Leary did not LSD illegal make. Duh.

I'm sure he had some affect on LSD's legality. He might not be 100%, but he was at least a percentage.

The US government is 100% responsable for making LSD illegal, not Leary.

Halpern is a tool. Which is fine, as long as he can generate accurate numbers. That's what research scientists are for; to be used as a tool, an instrument of research that generates analysable data that can be reproduced and validated by other research scientists.

Leary wasn't a very good "research scientist", but then again neither was Carl Sagan.

They both contributed more to society and human knowledge than 99.9% of all the mindless buffoons in white lab coats out there.

But apparently Dr. Halpern is not a believer of spiritual molecularism.

or molecular spiritualism or whatever.
