Blue light is far different them blue spectrum.

Blue spectrum is a wave length measured in kelvin(I think so anyways, been a while since I visited the light shop).

i believe the spectrum of an incandescent bulb contains blue light

*what is the difference between blue light/blue spectrum? I thought "blue light" was light that had wavelengths around 4-500 nm...I may be WAY off here as it has been awhile since science class

thats what im referring to...notice the relative power of the blue is far exceeded by the red, but it still contains blue light in the spectrum...therefore the question is if the blue glass bulb only allows the blue to show through

The color of the glass on the bulb or tube has zero to do with how much of what "color" spectra is being emitted.Go to Wal-Fart and look in the pets/aquarium(fish) supplies area.You should find mini flouresecent bulbs to screw into your existing light bulb fixtures.On the back side you will see a spectra chart.You will notice on the back side there is a graph and above it reads full spectrum lighting.Looking at the graph it clearly shows that the bulb is above and beyond high in blue spectra.Brand is Lights of America-Mini Flourescent Aquarium Bulb - 10 watt flourescent bulb - color enhancing = ideal for freshwater aquariums. model 2110AQ.Its in about a 7 inch box that is blue with tropical fish prined on it.Also right where you find those you should find aquari-flux flourescent tubes made by PENN-PLAX 18" and 24".They are also high in blue spectra as you can see by the spectra graph on the box.If you go to the lighting section right there in waldo world you will find next to the black lights GE Grow Lights in a 24" fixture for 9.99.Perfect for the Penn-Plax 24" tubes.Happy pinning!

Damn Ras, that sounds about right.

X-mas lights are basically just tinted lights

Tinted= regular light
Blue Tinted lights= Regular light
Blue light= Best spectra kind of light for pinning.

Just wanted to back Ras up.

And add that I used christmas lights for awhile, I hooked them up to a timer and never really had to worry about lighting, heh, it's good for those times when you want low wattage and can't always be there to play the tyrant and flick that damn switch. :thumbup:

gnostic what do you mean exactly by "regular light"? incandescent? By "blue light" you are referring to the blue spectrum? Incandescent and fluorescent both have a "full spectrum," but i believe the "full-spectrum flourescent" lights sold in stores has more relative power at the blue/purple end of the spectrum.

Im not saying incandescent is better than a full spectrum fluorescent. But, incandescent does have some blue light in it, so it should work. I believe the reason they are both "Full spectrum" (in spectroscopy terms) is because they both contain a mixture of gasses, but i can't back that up. Single gasses like mercury, neon, etc will show up on a spectroscope as 2 or 3 vertical lines, while incandescent and fluorescent produce a full range of colors. As shown earlier in the incandescent spectrum, while it has SOME blue light, it is most definitely not the most effective at emitting it.

That's correct fellow.If you hold a flourescent tube up to a light and rock it back and forth you can see the mercury rolling around inside sometimes. :rasta:
