verm. subsitute?

Ok, in light of my last post about verm. going off the shelf.
What else can we use for a subsitute? For the most part I have my own sub. mix that I came up with awhile ago, but it to uses verm. mixed in, as well as the last 1/2" layer for contamination reasons. I would hate to have to pick up a bail of hay, and thats the only thing I can think of...not even sure if I can use hay/brf together. The only reason I ask is because lately more and more people are having a difficult time find verm. So if their is any truth to verm. going off the shelf, then we need a subsitute. thanks for any good useable reply's.

I just seen another post with the same ? that i'm asking(opps...sorry). Anyway someone had said to use cork. Does this seem like it would work? Just grind it up and throw it in. I would hate to use another substrate because with the other stuff that I throw in I usaully end up with fully colonized cakes after 7 days. So now you can see why i'm buggin over here. I really don't want to order either. Anyone have any other proven substrate that might do just as good, and just as easy to obtain all the goodies. I live in new jersey so i have a million store's in about a 2 block area. thx

...hi there...
...I live in New Jersey also, and I know that Pathmark supermarkets carry vermiculite if they have a floral department in the store - that's where I usually get mine...

Jared, indeed. I dont have a local Canadian tire but one is a short drive/bus ride away. Last time I checked it had a great range of shroom growing supplies. Luckly, I live right by, meaning a two minute walk, frome a nice nursery that stocks vermiculite and perlite. I love it. Yes I do. Canad rules!
