I hate to be the one to say this, but ver. is going off the market as of now! I don't know if anyone/everyone knows this...maybe im the last to find out. But this is for real my local homedepot has stopped carring it, and so will everyone else in the very near future. So what do i use now as a ver. substitute?

Vermiculite is used by so many people, why would it be going off the market? You can still get it in Canada, btw.

its prolly not going off the market its prolly just the end of the season and there done so they sell them back to the company they bought it from, just like they do with seeds

Vermiculite isn't going off the market. It might be going off the supply lists for YOUR HomeDeput, but it's readily available elsewhere. Awhile back there was an asbestos scare where some batches from one mica mine were supposedly lightly contaminated with it. This caused many stores that had vermiculite from the contaminated batch to take it off the shelves. That should be all past now though. I have no trouble getting it from the local Ace Hardware or True Value.

ok then ....I can see the person I spoke to was an idoit! Thanks for clearing that up! I was pretty scared ther for a min.
Didn't mean to put a scare on anyone else. I thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know what I was told.
I've been doing this hobby for 3 yrs. and that was the first time I heard that. The only reason I belived it..was because I left for the military for a little while and now that i'm back(for good :) I really did think something was going on.
See that...Let this be a lesson for all the young one's out here...Military will brian-wash you into beliving anything...say no to the government...for your sake!

there was an esbestos (sp) scare in the UK(I think)
And it was pulled from a lot of shelves.
But it was in the UK only not here but most stores who caught wind of it pulled it to avoid problems.

I hate to say this, but I just got off the phone with a company that deals with verm. And the news doesn't sound so great!
She told me that there really is a big debate going on to take verm. off the market. She said it hasn't happend yet, although some store will no longer carry it for this reason, but also in the very near future no one will have it. There trying to come up with a substitute for it as we speak. I did score some however. But now we might be forced to come up with some alternatives. this makes about 8 people that have told me this truth.

-Why would they be taking verm. off the market and be trying to find a substitute? That doesn't make any sense! Verm is perfectly allright, there's no reason to take it off the market. The only reason would be if no one was buying it, but if that were true, then why would they be trying to come up with alternatives?

And by the way, stop posting three different threads that have to do with the same thing: I've read 2 or 3 different posts by you, and they're all about you trying to find verm.

Now you want to get alittle pissy about this. I'm trying to help out all of us you half-wit! Sorry ...had to get that out of my system.
First of all I know I was going to get flamed for the posts all relating to the same topic...and I do belive I said sorry for this...like you don't make mistakes.
Second if you did some research yourself..perhaps you might find that the following information is correct. Take SHULTZ for example, the rep. for the company told me that they will most likly disconntinue ther line of verm., at least you wont beable to buy it by itself.
Most if not all company's will still use this product, but it will be much more difficult to find by it's self. The'll just be bagging it up with soil and other things. It's to much of a danger for the general public to use because of the polymer's that are contained with in. And more of the public buy it already mixed in.
Now run along back to school...and make sure you do your homework.

one more thing...the substitute for verm. is not going very well, for the reason it would just cost labor production way to much money and still have it be cost effective.

If your little pea-brian is having problems with all this you can think of it this way: You can't have cannabis seed's in your possesion even though they only contain a fraction of THC.
Well the same might(NOTICE I SAID MIGHT) be true for verm.
Have you ever seen bags that say use gloves, have no conntact with open sore's, cuts, eye's, ect. Well all this is do to mining condition's (from what I was told), and the other facts posted.
This is america buddy, not canada. Diffirent laws apply here.
I didn't relize I had to be so anal in here. I thought most (NOTICE I SAID MOST) of us were pretty well off with commen sence. My bad...

Second, stop posting the same shit in three different posts. If you want to increase your # of posts, do it in a better way.
Third, you are an idiot. Even if verm. was going off the market, there would still be some companies that woud sell it. Why? Because there's a demand for it. You said they were making an alternative? That's bullshit. Why make an alternative when there's nothing wrong with verm. in the first place? Oh, and I don't understand a thing you said about THC in the marijuana seeds... What does that have to do with anything? Please explain this to me.

The asepestos(SP?) scare is not even a concern for us it is only a concern for the people that process it. there is a huge post about it here or on the forest florr. It would make more sense to me that they would come up wuith a better production methode rather than lose lots of money closeing mines/finding a subsitite/setting up new plants. that would nto make any sense.

Yep this VERM SCARE is old news around here and while some chains/stores may not be carrying it anymore I had no problem buying it TODAY at my regular spot. Anyone ever hear of a home center type joint called "Doody's"? I only know of this one but with a name like "Doody" it cant be exclusive to Bklyn, NY anyway this is the only place I can find Ball jars also.

Well, im sorry to hear that your supplier doesnt carry vrm anymore. As for us new yorkers, its gonna take a littl more than an asbestos scare to get home depot to stop selling the stuff!

maybe in some states or some area, but.... I live in NY State, and they're pretty liberal here, and I'd figure they'd be one of the first to take it off the market if it had a health hazard, but... I can still buy it here. In fact the place where I buy it from (a farm and gardening store) just ran out and said another order was coming in this coming week.

In Montana there is a whole town that the EPA is considering making a superfund sight because of verm. mining that has been going on along time there. It has been making the news because they (WR Grace & Co) have been telling the people that verm is ok and did very little to protect them. People have been hacking their lungs out there for several decades and deaths attributed to the mine are climbing. CDC (center for disease control) came and did a big study on the residence of Libby (northwest corner of the state, grizzlys and even caribou are often seen) and found the population to have very abnormally high rates of respiratory (love that word) problems which they eventually traced to the mine. The stupid thing is that those same people who are dying of this mess are the same people who just poo-poo "environmentalists" and have long been supporters of the mining industry and the logging industry for that matter. SO, I would guess that long term, repeated exposure to verm. without any precaustions of saftey measures may be hazardous. I would also guess that most of the people who post/read here put at least that much shit in thier bodys just when they eat and which is probably worse than as much vermiculite as we handle.

this is probably of little use. One type of verm was pulled from the market about 6 months ago due to asbestos (SP), anyways verm has a large amout of small dust particals that can cause lung problems. My friend (who really does run a garden store) told me that the talk about removing it from the market was aimed more at the chain store brands (smaller bags) and he felt that the larger bags (ak the 4 cu feet bags and larger) will still be sold. Just my 2 cents, who knows i am probably wrong

You have to understand the government mentality to grasp the considered ban of verm.

It begins with your typical mycophile that has been breathing in all that potentially harmful verm dust for the past 20 or so years. Although the excessive intake of fruitbodies has yet to cause any physical harm to him, his doctor has informed him his lungs are congested and he should consider quiting smoking. The avid shoomer stops at his local 7/11 picks up a couple packs of Lucky Cigarrettes and three six packs of beer.
Relaxing in front of his TV, CNN anounces a posibility that Vermiculite "could" contain small amounts of asbestos that has been linked to lung disease. "Good Lord" thinks the very inibriated shoomer, "That must be what caused my lung problems." The distraght shroomer gussles the remaining 2 brews, and knowing that he probably only has another 20 or so years to live, takes the loaded 45 he bought at Sally's Gun and Pawn Shop (it was on sale) from its usual place on the coffe table, and eats a bullet to end his anticipated future suffering.
The Police do their standard investigation of the premises and discover the poor shoomers growing supplies and tek notes. Although no actual mushrooms are found, the coroner naturaly goes with the preponderance of the evidence and lablels the death a drug related suicide.
The tragic suicide is reported on CNN where government officials see it and decide something MUST be done!
It only stands to reason they would center their efforts on the first stage of this horrible event to "Nip things in the bud" and Ban the Killer Vermiculite, protecting society once again !!!

See... It really does make sense... and for our own good !
