My friend's jar lids have become a little rusty around the hole for inoculation. Is this going to present a problem for future use of the jars? Should he go buy new lids?

With a hole drilled in plastic lids, you will. If you mean just tyvek & the metal ring, jars will dry out.

I don't use aluminum foil. Either foil or c/filters. Not both.

Had loose foil on some jars once, turned on fan, foil blew off about 1/2 the jars. Had 4 strains. Suddenly, I didnt know which was which, as writing was on foil. Coffee filters held down with rubber bands, do not come off.

Thats weird...i always have problems w the coffee filters blowing off...I put the aluminum foil on TIGHT before it goes into the pressure cooker...ive never had a problem with it coming off (in fact its quite a task when theyre ready to open) and then the coffee filters after they come out and have been injected. if i only used foil it would leave room for contaminants, and if i only used filters...well i dont know how it would hold up in the PC, but i guess having both just makes more sense to me
