chopping straw fast
    #3821822 - 02/23/05 11:06 AM (19 years, 1 month ago)

Does anyone know of a way to chop straw fast?  Chopping by hand sucks big time.  Can't really think of anything that might be effective besides hedge shears or some sort of farm-sized shredding machine.  Let's think about this!

Wow that thing looks noisy. Does home depot have a return policy on things like that, that have only been used once?

Home depot's return policy is crazy, if you steal something from home depot, take it to another one for a full refund!

My sister used to work at one, where people would do all sorts of shitty things like that and she couldn't do anything about it.

So IMHO, if you take it back, say it wasn't what your looking for and you will check back in the future, you will probly get your money back.

is shreading your straw any better than using it whole??? Has anyone done a side by side grow comparison??? I've never shredded straw. the tray colonized just fine. is it a matter of colinization speed? and if so is a day quicker worth the hastle?

Black and Decker leaf blower/vac !!

1 inch pieces or smaller, a whole bale might take you a few hours at most to run it twice.

Go check out local EQT rental places. See if they have small portable gas powered shedder/chipper on wheels - or one you can load into P/U truck. If so & 1/2 or full day rental is not beyond your budget?

Go get a few bales from feed store & some very large lawn & garden debris type garbage bags from HomeDepot (or - wherever). Get set up. Go rent chipper/shredded & shred your bales, store in bags. 1, 2 or 3 year supply of fine fluffy stuff can be made in less than 8 hour rental day.

These are all wonderful ideas. Thank you everyone!

Agar:  what is EQT?

Are these portable blower/mulchers very loud?  They are gasoline engines so it seems like they would be.  Noise bothers neighbors you know!

edit:  Looked up an inexpensive  blower/mulcher  at walmart.com.  ~$50, not bad!  And it plugs into the wall.

It says it produces noise at 65 dB.

According to google research,

Normal Conversation  60 dB
Busy Street Traffic  70 dB

This seems just about okay....

You will find out - those little plug in toys - will do very loose dry tree leaves. But, when it comes to STRAW..... they begin to malfunction & clog rapidly.

I would assume that a food processor or a blender would chop it up but perhaps no one suggested it because you said you wanted soemthing that would chop it up fast.. Although ive never tried im sure its somewhat time consuming using a blender

65 DB is fairly LOUD.. imagine about 4 hairblowers worth when you put them to work.

The really cheap ones might have a problem, but i guarantee you the black&decker ones " Leaf Hog " will work just fine. ( i've actually tried it and man !! )
