1 pint jars for 1/2 pint substrate?

In my last growing procedure I used 1 pint jars and noticed that they colonized rather slowly (some of which because of inexperience). For next time I was thinking of colonizng a 1/2 pint of substrate for faster results. Does anyone see a problem with filling the 1 pint jars with only 1/2 pint of substrate and filling the rest of the jar with the top vermiculite layer? The only difference I see between that and the normal filling with vermiculite to about an inch from the top of the jar would be with air exchange. Anyone see that as a problem?

depending on how u noc, the verm might absorb all your spores and they won't make it to the nutes to colonize, try fillin about 3/4 the way full and add a tyvek filter (available FREE from any post office)

no I use rye grain witch expands a lot I fill 1/4 of the way with grain then it rises to 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the jar this also allows more oxygen in the container for faster growth

You could always use the pint jars for WBS(Wild Bird Seed)...and move on to casings.

If you really want to stick with BRF/Verm cakes...get some 1/2 pint jars.

Filling up the top with dry verm will make it hard for you to inoculate the substrate below the dry verm layer.
Unless you get a really really long needle for your syringe...and I'm not sure how long they come.
