G2G/G2B transfer techniques. What are yours?
    #3821898 - 02/23/05 01:24 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

I lost more jars than I really needed or wanted to last time I did G2G transfers. This time I'm looking at spawning my WBS/popcorn to a bulk mix. What I do is wipe down my bathroom with bleach, remove shower curtain, rugs, etc, and just work in there with gloves, alcohol, and a face mask. I don't have a HEPA filter, nor a glove box, nor a flow hood. Just looking for some tips and tricks that will help reduce my contamination, I don't see many sterile teks for G2G. (Link me if there are)

Also, I am going to be spawning 4 quarts to each of 10 x 10 gallon tubs used as terrarium casings. I have a very small bathroom, not all of this will fit in there at once. Each tub's bulk will come from one oven bag filled with 3.5 gallons.

I'm just looking for a summary of the procedures taken for those conducting an operation similar to this.

some tips, you need a glovebox or a flowhood or else you're oging to keep losing jars.

also, if you think you can pull it off in a bathroom, use alcohol on everything. outside, your jars, gloves, your work space. also, get a mask or something to cover your hair and mouth. dont breathe.

like i said, it would be a lot easier for you to get a glove box.

Agar had an excellent post (as always) that I was just reading about grain to grain transfers.

I'm about to try it in a few days...we'll see how it goes

Does anyone treat their spawn with H2O2?

i also do g2g in a small bathroom without hepas or glovebox. i have had very low contam rates. mayb 1 in 20. the best advice i can offer you is to move as quickly as possable leaving the lids of for as short amount of time as neccesery.

My foaf spawns rye grain to straw in the kitchen. use lots of spawn. put your bulk in a garbage bag. toss in your spawn and roll that sucker all over the place. need it squeeze it do what ever you have to to mix that stuff up. Now take the bag and dump your substrate into your tray. pack it down as hard as you can. take your last jar of spawn and spread it out over your compacted substrate. cover this with a garbage bag. let sit in your incubator. your done. I like to think adding a jar of spawn to the top helps to colonize the top quick as a protective layer.
I dont do alot of cleaning up I give the counter tops a good cleaning with lysol and make sure my trays are clean. thats it.
