it takes some time and practice but as you can see blenders DO work...the key is to cut the straw first(so you'd still need to use one of the other methods first) and use very little amounts at a time...the way the mycelium flys through it and how easy and evenly the spawn mixes in...I'd never do another casing involving straw without it

It takes about an hour to do a mini bale from walmart in a blender once you get going. Mini bales I got were like 1x1x2 compacted well.

I would have mentioned the blender but it seems this person wants to chop it much faster then with a blender. It works for me though.

Also, I found it easier if you use a hydrogen peroxide bottle instead of the lid. my peroxide bottle (the big one) cant hit the blades (cant go down far enough because of the sloping in) so I stick half a blender full of straw and push it down with that and pulse it..when you get going with a tub full of straw to be done and a tub to put chooped straw in, it takes like 20 seconds to cram some in and chop it up and dump it then repeat process like 200 times. I started with 2 bins full of unchopped straw and ended up with one bin just as full of fully shreaded straw. Easy to spawn, mix up, compact down...havnt got them to fruiting yet, but in a few days we'll see how the extra nutes per cubic inch do.

Maybe one of those Blendtec blenders that they blend iPods and shit with in their demos. I bet one of those would work incredibly well.
