what is so great about the Grateful Dead.

I really want to know. I really what to understand what the appeal is. In terms of music though, not in terms of the hippy culture surrounding the band.

I heard their song "touch of grey" a few times. It's alright but nothing to write home about. What about their music makes them a good band?

I'd better save Phish for another thread...

one of the many great things about the grateful dead was what they stood [stand] for. jerry garcia's messages of love, unity, peace are messages that will stand the test of time, thanks to their unique sound and lyrics.

not to mention jerry himself, who was a very unique individual. he had a lot of social commentary that needed to be heard, and he made it heard through his music.

the grateful dead rocks, pure and simple.

I know about all about the ideas surrounding their music. so that's it then? it's just the ideas and not the music itself? I mean, I think their music is just average. Why not idolize the Beatles in the same way as the Dead? They were all about love, unity, and peace too, especially Lennon.

you're partly right, without the culture and the ideals surrounding the grateful dead, i don't think they would've been as huge as they were/are. they spoke for an entire counter-culture through their words, as did the beatles like you say. the main difference in the music is that they were the first band to play long extended jams outside of jazz. jerry listened to john coltrane and thought why can't a rock band do that? their influences from country, blues, rock, and jazz created a very unique sound for the time. they were the first jam band, pure and simple. combine that with their messages, timed with the invention of acid, and the anti-war movement, and you have something that will never be duplicated.

Judging a band by one song, produced later their career is hardly fair. There is so much more music than that one song, but as that was the "hit single" that brought their music to the attention of the mainstream it's the one that gets used to judge them.

To really dig the music you need to listen to some of their live recordings where they improvise on their old standards. There's nothing like listening to them jam from one song into another, hearing teases for different songs, always different and always fresh.

All the acid helped, too :-)

I see... I didn't really know what a "jam" band was before. So it's like improvised blues-rock? maybe I'll download a live set of theirs one day to see what it's like.

Just go listen to their best studio album American Beauty. It's classic, you don't have to be a deadhead to enjoy that album, it transcends beauty like few other albums do.

And if that record doesnt do it for you, well...

Yeah, the live stuff is a must....and if you listen to a good live show while on acid (esp with headphones in a dark room) you'll understand the magic!  :sun: :gd_icon: :peace:
