Denatured Alcohol

Ok, I've searched and read a couple different posts about using denatured alcohol for extractions. Some people say not to use it at all because it can leave behind harmful residues/toxins. Others say it depends on what it's denatured with. I can get ethanol that is denatured with methanol. Assuming it evaporates clean (which I will test before using), it should be safe to use, right?

Evaporate a couple hundred milliliters and make sure there is no residue. From what I've read denatured alcohol can include methanol, water and petroleum distillates. So keep that in mind when you're doing your extraction.

They usually have to display when it contains petroleum distillates, right? The can just says etyhl and methyl ether.

Probably should be fine. Just be sure that all evaporates off in the end.

This is just hearsay, but:
The drunks here separate the ingridient that gives the bad taste from the alcohol by pouring the alcohol over a frozen iron bar (needs to be at least -40 celsius, possible here in winter sometimes). The alcohol will flow down the bar, but everything else will freeze and stick to the bar. The locals use a piece of railroad track, its good because of the U-shape.
Anyway I've only heard it done, never seen it.

Well that's silly, because if it's ethanol denatured with methanol, then they both would flow down the bar, both being alcohols and all. Unless of course methanol has a low boiling point or freezing point. That's very risky behavior.

Alcohol is not denatured with methanol here, but with a non-toxic vile-tasting substance that makes you puke instantly if you try to drink it. I don't know what kind of denatured alcohol he plans on using. The drunks here use brand names Sinol and Marinol, which contain no methanol.
edit: And yes, you are right -using that method with methanol would be very risky.

Hehe, in the states, Marinol is the name of a brand name Cannabinoid pill.

Can't you buy grain alcohol in most parts of the country? Not legal to sell on the shelf here in PA but I hear you can buy it with somekinda special 'firehandlers' permit (don't ask, because I don't know), or just travel 40 mins cross the border to West Virginia.
