Agh, I hate when I miss like 50 posts and then respond to one way back there and seem like a slow idiot...I promise I'm not really. a/b = rational number unless a or b is an irrational number. Like the sin of 60, sqrt(3)/2, that's the exact representation of the number, while the decimal form is approximate.

further refinement: Rational numbers are a/b where b does not equal zero and a and b belong to the set of integers.

i just don't think it is fair to exclude zero from being the denominator...

including it as the denominator would make it disqualified for the set of rational numbers (show me infinity on a ruler). It can belong to a number set, so don't you worry about our friend a/0.

Alright damnit, I'm getting the ACLU in here. We have to fight the rights of 0! 0's are people too! We live in a world of discrimination, damnit, every number has the right, nay, the DUTY to be in the denominator!!! Ahhh, sorry. Anyway zero in the denominator just doesn't make sense, because whatever the answer to 1/0, be it infinity, or one, or zero, or five, or whatever, when the operation is reversed you get ans x 0 = 1 and then all the rules of math go to hell in a handbasket. Now, if you really want to get into mind-bending science, look at quantum physics. It repeatedly says things that make absolutely no sense whatsoever, but if it weren't true, half of our daily appliances just wouldn't work. It is a theory that explains the universe as we see it quite well, and we have proven it many times in our applications of it, but it still doesn't make any sense at all.

Yeah, I like how quantum physics says that out of zero (the vacuum) comes infinity (the amount of energy, in "virtual particles", in the vacuum). That's where zero and infinity play some funny tricks on us: modern physics.

Haha, yeah, and then, those infinite particles exist in 5 places at once, but at the same time they don't exist at all. Shit.
